\0 IRITAS ti* December 4, 1961 Office of Public Information Vol. 2______NO. 11 ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL UPHOLDS CALENDAR At a special called meeting Thursday afternoon the Administrative Council voted unanimously to reaffirm its Tuesday decision to recommend to Dr. Pearson that the year’s academic calendar be maintained as published. Before going into executive session, the Council listened to a presentation from Bill Cornell, Undergraduate Student Government president, requesting dismissal of classes Dec. 15 for the Liberty Bowl football game. At meeting’s end, the Administrative Council issued the following statement: ’’The Administrative Council voted unanimously this afternoon (Nov. 50) to reaffirm its action of November 28 maintaining this year’s academic calendar as published. ’’ATfesolutioiTwas adopte“d, again unanimously, commending Bill Cornell, undergraduate student president, for his presentation relating to this matter before the Council. ’’Further, the Council expressed itself as being gratified with the mature manner in which the students have approached this problem. ’’The Council’s action was based solely on academic considerations. It shares with the students their pride in the University of Miami’s football team.” Before taking action, the council also was apprised of action of the Faculty Council on Wednesday. Text of a resolution adopted by the Faculty council, as transmitted by Dr. Herman Myers, faculty council chairman, to Dr. Robert Johns, administrative council chairman, read: ’’That we express our sympathy to the student body in their desire, and 2, that the request is, however, inconsistent with previous policy established by the Faculty Council and therefore the Faculty Council feels that it should take no action.” The recommendations voted Tuesday had been approved by Dr. Pearson prior to reaffirmation Thursday. CONSULTS FOR AUU Joining two other representatives of the Association of Urban Universities, Dr. Pearson last week consulted with officials of the University of Bridgeport on present activities and future plans of that Connecticut institution. Dr. Pearson is past president (1959-60) of the AUU. NOTED DUTCH SCIENTIST LECTURES Lectures on Marine Geology are being presented at noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Dec. 15 in the Marine Institute classroom by Professor Philip H. Kuenen of the Geologisch Instituut, Groningen, Netherlands. Topics include geological experiments, transportation, abrasion, tidal flats and turbidity currents. Several lectures will include movies. Students, faculty and staff welcome. SPEAKING OF FACULTY In recognition of his services along many cultural and civic lines in the Miami community, Dr. H. Franklin Williams is among invited guests on the Friends of Israel Pan-American cruise on the S.S. Jerusalem. Upon his return Dr. Williams will testify before the U.S. Senate hearing in Washington on Cuban assistance programs...Wilson Hicks, director of publications and lecturer in journalism, has been appointed a member of the News Photo Committee of the Associated Press Managing Editors’ Continuing Studies. Before joining LIFE, Mr. Hicks served as executive news feature editor and executive news photo editor...Dr. Harold Humm, Duke University tropical marine algae specialist, is the first visiting scientist to join the Institute of Marine Sciences under the new National Science Foundation visiting investigator program. A UM graduate, Class of ’34, and former Hurricane editor, he will teach a seminar course in the spring...Dr. Eugene Man,for 9 years associated with duPont research work, has joined UM as director of research programming. He will work under the supervision of Dr. Irving Muskat, vice president for research...Dr. David G. Anderson, University of Wisconsin postdoctoral fellow, is currently associated with Dr. Charles E. Lane’s physiology group work on biochemistry of physalia toxin at the Institute of Marine Sciences...Dean Wesley A. Sturges, Law School, was discharged from Doctors Hospital last week and is convalescing at home from his recent emergency appendectomy. He expects to return to his office shortly...Prof. Herbert A. Kuvin, Law School, participated in the second annual Fire Investigation and Subrogation Seminar at Miami Beach last week. He was a member of a ■ panel discussing ’’Interpretation of a Fire Insurance Policy” and ’’Pre-Trial Discovery.” He delivered a paper and discussion on ’’Recent Trends in Subrogation Decisions.”. Dr. T.J. Wood, chmn. govt., and Prof. Edward Sofen, govt., appeared on panels in the 67th national conference on government sponsored by the National Municipal League at Miami Beach last week...Dr. Edward J. Fox, chmn, marketing, conducted an advanced management training seminar for Canadian National Railroad executives at Saskatoon, Sask. Dr. Jose A. Balseiro, Hispanic Literature, has been invited to join the P.E.N. Club, a dis-tinguished organization of writers founded by John Galsworthy. TWO ALUMNI WIN RUNOFF Victors in last week's runoff election for Miami city commission are both UM alumni, David T. (for Thomas) Kennedy won his LLB in 1958, was a member of ODK and Wig & Robe. Alice C.(for Colts) Wainright was awarded her LLB in 1950.
