SPEAKING OF PEOPLE HE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff July 29, 1968 Summer Issue DR. V. A. SHIPLEY NAMED ACTING Dr. Vergil A. Shipley, profes-DEAN FOR SCHOOL OF BUSINESS sor and acting chairman of the government department,became acting dean of the School of Business Administration July 1. He succeeds Dr. Clark E. Myers, who is now dean of Emory University’s School of Business Administration. A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Shipley received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at the University of Oklahoma, his doctoral degree at the University of London. He served from 1943-46 with the Army field artillery in the European Theatre, attaining the rank of captain. Before coming to UM in 1957, he was an associate professor of political science at the University of Wichita. He was chosen as one of the 12 outstanding teachers at UM this year. DRS, DANDENEAU, RICH Promotions of Dr. Richard J. Dandeneau NEW ASSOCIATE DEANS and Dr. Earl R. Rich to associate deans of the College of Arts and Sciences were announced by Dean Louis L. McQuitty. Dr. Dandeneau, formerly assistant dean of the College and associate professor of speech, will direct the Office for General Students and be responsible for supervising academic programs and procedures affecting some 5,000 undergraduate students whose academic homes are in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of General Students. Dr. Rich, associate professor of zoology in the biology department, will be responsible for academic programs, plans and developments in the College. He has participated in a number of nationwide curriculum design programs at various levels and has played a major role in the development of the new core program in biology which he will continue to coordinate. Dr. Dandeneau has been at UM since 1962, Dr. Rich since 1957. ASSOCIATE DEAN ANNOUNCED Dr. Donald A. Sawyer, former head IN UM ENGINEERING SCHOOL professor of civil engineering at Auburn University, has joined the University as associate dean and professor of civil engineering in the School of Engineering. Dr. Sawyer, 40, a native of Fort Myers, Florida, received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1950, his Master’s in structural engineering in 1951 and his Ph.D. in structural engineering in 1959, all from the University of Florida. / jHe has served as engineer with various firms in Florida and \>c;orgia, was an assistant professor and later associate professor in civil engineering at the University of Florida from 1959-1965 before going to Auburn University as head professor of civil engineering, a post he held until July 1 of this year. Dr. Sawyer is married and has four children. Dr. Archie L. McNeal. director of libraries, was elected second vice president of the American Library Association at the final session of the association’s 87th annual conference in Kansas City... Schubert Jonas, founding director of the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art, has joined UM as administrator of Lowe Art Museum and assistant professor of museology... A report, “Carbonate Sand Bodies of Florida and the Bahamas,” by Dr. Mahlon M. Ball, IMS, has been named most outstanding paper for the year 1967 in the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology... Louis Gluck. M.D., an eminent specialist in the medical care and treatment of the newborn — has been appointed to the School of Medicine as professor of pediatrics and chief of neonatology. He comes here from Yale University School of Medicine... Dr. August L. Freundlich, director, Lowe Art Museum, served on a three-man jury judging the 8th annual Festival of the Arts and first annual Austral Salon in Cali, Colombia... Seven IMS men attended the 4th Annual Conference and Exposition of the Marine Technology Society in Washington, D.C. July 7-10. They were Dr. Richard Bader. Cmdr. Robert White. Dr. John Steinberg. Dr. Saul Broida. William Green, Lloyd Stover and Shale Niskin... Paul J. Apt, controller, and Richard H, Wiskeman, Jr., CPA, accounting, have been elected directors of the National Association of Accountants Miami Chapter for 1968-69. Apt is the new director of manuscripts and Wiskeman is director of educational activities...
