SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff March 18, 1968 Voi. 8, No. 13 HUMANITIES RESEARCH The Research Council Committee of Re-GRANT WINNERS NAMED search in the Arts and Humanities has announced awards to five faculty members for research during this coming summer. They are: Miss Shirley Ann Brown, art, for “A Problem in Art History”; Dr. Hank Diers, drama, for “An Annotated Bibliography of Fritz Lieber Materials”; Dr. John E. Hall, humanities, for “Grecian Underwater Archaeological Research”; Dr. John H. Knoblock, humanities, for “An Investigation of Western Chou Ideology and Institutional Patterns”, and Dr. Francis E. Skipp, English, for “An Investigation of the Circumstances Surrounding the Composition of Two Literary Works c.1800.” Said Dr. Sidney L. Besvinick, associate dean of Research Coordination, “The funds which will enable these professors to pursue their work have been provided by the University from its own resources in recognition of the importance of research in the arts and humanities and as a token contribution to the current minimal governmental effort in these areas.” MANNED UNDERSEAS A manned underseas station a thousand feet STATION PROPOSED below the surface of the Atlantic off Miami Beach is proposed by UM oceanographic engineers. The project, entitled “Atlantis” for Atlantic Technical Logistics and Transport Installation System, would be a joint university-government-industry project. John H. Clotworthy, chairman of the division of ocean engineering, said the project would cost millions, but that the immediate need is for engineering talent as the project enters the preliminary design phase. Although the station would first be tested at 100 feet and semi- permanently emplaced at 1,000 feet, work at depths of 6,000 feet is the goal. Advantages in the field of education would be research into physical oceanography, geology, biology and undersea training. For industry, it would be a center for development, equipment and methods for more efficient drilling, mining, fishing, mineral extraction (particularly oil). For government, it would be for national defense, an anti-submarine command and control center, a facility for development of improved defensive and offensive weapons and identification and tracking of surface vessels. EVENING DIVISION Enrollment of evening students went from ENROLLMENT IS UP 4,501 in the Fall Semester to 4,668 in the Spring Semester, the Office of the Registrar reports. With 11,527 day division students, total enrollment this Spring Semester is 16,195 or 423 lower than in the fall, representing a normal net-loss between first and second semesters. Dr. H.
