SPEAKING OF PEOPLE ( THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Voi. 9, No. 5 November 18, 1968 FALL ENROLLMENT Total enrollment at the UM for the 1968-69 TOTAL IS 17,149 fall semester is 17,149 according to Reg- istrar George W. Smith. This is an increase of 531 students or 3% over the 1967-68 fall enrollment. The breakdown: 13,252 in the day division and 3,897 in the evening division. In the day division, the increase was 1,135 students or 9%; fulltime day students increased by 757 or 7%. The evening division experienced a decrease — from 4,501 to 3,897 or 13%. UNIVERSITY ACCEPTED The UM has been accepted for member-BY NATIONAL CENTER ship in the governing body of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo. The UM is one of 25 member universities in the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Membership in UCAR will give UM faculty and advanced students access to the National Center's sophisticated computers and the international data stored in their memory banks, said Dr. Eric B. Kraus, director of the iJM's Institute of Atmospheric Science. SIGMA XI CHAPTER The Society of Sigma Xi has approved a rec-GETS APPROVAL ommendation of its executive committee to grant a charter for the establishment of a Chapter of the society of the Sigma Xi to the University of Miami. The meeting at Wentworth-by-the-Sea, New Hampshire, at which the action was taken, was attended by Dr. William B. Deichmann, president, and Dr. Carroll Truss, treasurer, of the UM's Sigma Xi Club. FISHERIES INSTITUTE The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute HOLDS CONVENTION (GCFI) sponsored by the UM's Institute of Marine Sciences, is holding its annual session through Thursday at the UM's Conference Center in the Sheraton-Four Ambassadors Hotel. Dr. Clarence P. Idyll, chairman of the fishery sciences division, IMS, is chairman of the GCFI. The meeting has earned international reputation as a rewarding event for hundreds of commercial and game fishermen, seafood industrialists, conservationists and public administrators. UNITED FUND DRIVE The 1968 United Fund campaign on the UM REACHES $34,900 campus had reached a figure of $34,900 as of Veritas' press time, November 11. This presents 70 per cent of the target — with $15,100 to go. Charles Capps, assistant secretary-treasurer at the UM and campus campaign chairman, said, “President Stanford has requested that we extend the deadline for announcement of final results to give everyone an opportunity to do his share for his communities' needs. “We hope to have all reports in today.“ President Stanford was guest speaker at the annual banquet of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Oct. 29 at Miami Springs Villas Playhouse. The Singing Hurricanes performed at the meeting which saluted the University... Dr. Robert J. Harrison, surgery (audiology) and Dr. Betty W. Philips, surgery (otolaryngology) presented a joint paper on “Articulatory Development of Cleft Palate Children“ at the national meeting of the American Speech and Hearing Association in Denver Nov. 13-18. Dr. Harrison also gave a paper on the development of an impedance measure to evaluate hearing loss... Dr. Robert W. Hivelv. director of programs in honors and privileged studies, and professor of English, was featured speaker at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers at the New York Hilton Hotel Nov. 13... Professor J. M. Jauch. Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Geneva, will be a visiting member at the Center for Theoretical Studies through January. He is engaged in writing a book, “Foundations of Scattering Theory," a sequel to his recently published “Foundations of Quantum Mechanics.“... Dr. Richard Bader, associate director, IMS, attended the 1968 Annual Meetings of the Geological Society of America in Mexico City Nov. 11-13... Dr. John H. Curtiss, mathematics, presented a paper, “Transfi-nite Diameter and Harmonic Polynomial Interpolation“ at the American Mathematical Society's meeting at Clemson University Nov. 7-8...
