SPEAKING OF PEOPLE May 18,1964 Vol.Mo.17 FSU'S DR, BLACKWELL Dr. Gordon W. Blackwell, president of COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Florida State University, will give the commencement address at UM's June 7 ceremonies at 3 p.m. in the Miami Beach Convention Hall. FSU's president since 1960, Dr. Blackwell is a widely-known social scientist, former editor of Social Forces and former director of the University of North Carolina's Institute for Research in Social Science. More than 1,000 students are expected to receive their degrees at the exercises. DR. THARP RETIRING: TO BE CONSULTANT Dr. C. Doren Tharp, vice president for administration, will retire from his post on June 1. However, he will remain with the University as consultant in the development of archives pertaining to UM's founding and history. Dr. Tharp's new offices will be located in the Otto G. Richter Library. At a formal testimonial dinner, May 13, President Henry King Stanford presented Dr. Tharp with UM's highest award, the Order of Merit, “in recognition of distinguished leadership in the encouragement of academic excellence in higher education." The occasion, at which Dr. Tharp's new position was announced, also honored his 25 years of service to UM. (He first joined the faculty in 1939 as an assistant professor of English.) More than 400 colleagues and friends attended the affair at the Dupont Plaza. DUNHAM, DANDENEAU GIVEN NEW POSTS Two new administrative appointments have been announced by President Stanford, both effective July 1. C. dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, His duties will be to assist in Dr. R. J. Dandeneau, as- Bryce Dunham, associate will become assistant to the president, the various tasks of the President's Office, sociate professor of speech, will take over the role of assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dunham, a UM faculty member 1953-60, returned to the University last year. Dandeneau joined the UM faculty in 1962. MIAMI-DADE STUDENTS Eleven Miami-Dade Junior College WIN UM SCHOLARSHIPS honor students have been awarded $1,000 per year, two-year scholarships to UM, according to Dr. H. Franklin Williams, vice president and university scholarship committee chairman. All reside in the Dade County area. The scholars will be required to maintain honor grades and contribute a work assignment in some UM office or department. se in* gr: ca! Woodward, director of evaluation... Dr. Emmett Betts, education, has been elected to the New York Academy of Sciences... Homer Hiser and H. P. Gerrish. IMS, arranged and participated in the 1964 Army Conference on Tropical Meteorology at Fort Monmouth, N.J.... Karl Pond, modern languages, will teach at the NDEA Summer Language Institute at Colgate University this summer... Dr. Sidney Besvinick, education, spoke on “The New Adam” at the annual Orange Key honorary awards dinner... Dr. M. I. Mantell. civil engineering, has been elected 1964-65 chairman of the American Society for Engineering Education Instructional Unit...
