She has previously served as treasurer... ^T ^WS^ X^ Y For Faculty and Staff November 22, 1965 Vol. 6, No. 5 IMS/TABL DEDICATION DRAWS WORLD SCIENTISTS The emergence of UM's Institute of Marine Science as a leading world oceanographic center was marked Nov. 20 as scientists from around the globe joined UM and US officials in joint ceremonies dedicating IMS facilities, old and new, and the new Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory of the US Bureau of Fisheries, located opposite the IMS on Virginia Key. Principal speakers at the ceremonies were Admiral O. D. Waters, Jr., USN, Oceanographer of the Navy, and the Hon. Stanley A. Cain, Assistant Secretary of the Interior. Metro Mayor Chuck Hall welcomed the guests. Other speakers included President Stanford, Dr. Thomas S. Austin, TABL director and Dr. F. G. Walton Smith, IMS director since its founding in 1943. The meteoric growth of UM's most renowned academic and research program is related in the Sept.-Oct. issue of "Sea Frontiers," whose headquarters are at the IMS. Titled "IMS Comes of Age," it traces the history of the Institute from its beginnings in a rickety boat house to its present stature as one of the world's leading centers of teaching and research in the marine sciences. NSF GRANTS $118,410 FOR OTS WINTER PROGRAM The Organization for Tropical Studies, a ten-university effort for which UM is corporate headquarters, has received "a $118,410 grant from the National Science Foundation for its first winter session in Costa Rica. Dr. W. Henry Leigh, UM biology chairman and treasurer of OTS, reports that Dr. Calaway H. Dodson, botany, will conduct one of the three major sections in the 1965-66 winter program. Courses will include fundamentals of tropical biology, advanced botany and advanced zoology. Students may also pursue independent research projects. Study in the OTS program is open to graduate students, faculty members and other qualified scientists associated with colleges and universities. UM MEN ATTEND HEA MEETING Three UM representatives are attending a meeting in Atlanta today called by U.S. Commissioner of Education Francis Keppel for a briefing on the Higher Education Act of ^65. Dr. A. L. McNeal, director of UM libraries, Dr. Eugene H. _Man, coordinator of research and Dr. M. Robert Allen, dean of the Division of Continuing Education join delegates from other universities, U.S. Congressmen and governors of southeastern states at the session. Dr. McNeal is chairman of the section of the program dealing with Title II of the Higher Education Act. Miss Martha McGee, assistant dean of women, has been named to the first edition of "Outstanding Young Women of America"... "Culture and the Spanish Civil War — A Fascist View (1936- 1939)" by Dr. Kessel Schwartz. foreign languages, appeared in the October issue of the Journal of Inter-American Studies... Dr. Analee Bacon, humanities and music, presented a paper, "The Violoncello in the Baroque Period," at the Florida-Georgia meeting of the American Musi- cological Society in Gainesville. She is a member of the executive board of the Society... Dr. Gilbert Farley, education, attended the Teachers Education and Professional Standards Committee meeting in Tallahassee and was appointed chairman of the subcommittee on student affairs... "The Influence of Hydrocarbons on Photosynthesis of Citrus Leaves" by Dr. J. M. Riedhart. biology, and Robert T. McMillan, former graduate student, was awarded the "outstanding paper" citation by the Florida State Horticultural Society... Dr. Richard L. Carner. Reading Clinic, spoke on "Remedial Techniques in the Classroom" at the Florida Reading Conference in Clearwater... Dr. Duane Koenig. history, reviewed Claudio Pavone's book, "Amministrazione CentraleeAm- ministrazion^ Periferica Da Rat- tazi a Ricasoli (1859-1866)" in the Journal of Modern History.
