For Faculty and Staff November 20, 1967 Volume 8, No. 5 UM ENROLLMENT HITS UM enrollment hit an all-time record of AN ALL-TIME RECORD 16,618 students this fall, an increase of 13 per cent over the 14,633 enrolled last fall, according to figures released by Registrar George W. Smith. He attributed the increase to several factors: the greater retention of undergraduate students previously enrolled, a substantial gain in the number of transfer students, and a rising enrollment in graduate and professional programs. These gains offset a slight decline in the number of new entering freshmen, who totaled 1,859 compared with 1,981 last year. Of the total 16,618 registration, 12,117 are in day classes and 4,501 in evening classes. Transfers from other schools totaled 1,666 compared with 1,342 transfer students last year. DR. B. J. FOGEL NAMED Dr. Bernard J. Fogel, assistant profes-ASSISTANT DEAN sor of pediatrics and director of the Birth Defects Center, has been named assistant dean for curricular affairs. Dr. W. Dean Warren, dean, School of Medicine, said the new post was created as a result of extensive changes in medical school teaching programs, developed by a curricular revision committee. The assistant deanship will be in addition to Dr. FogeTs duties in the department of pediatrics. Also, as a Fellow of the American Cancer Society, he will continue his research into the immune systems of the newborn. Dr. Fogel obtained his M.D. from the University of Miami in 1961 and served his internship and first year of residency at JMH. He joined the medical school faculty in 1966, returning to Miami from Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington, D.C., where he had been assistant chief in the department of pediatrics. CUBAN REFUGEE ALUMNUS A Cuban refugee who received his Mas-SETS UP OWN SCHOLARSHIP ter’s degree at the UM in 1961 with the help of a $1,500 Bache & Co., Inc. scholarship has set up a personal $1,500 scholarship to aid another deserving student in the School of Business Administration. Fred Berens, 25, wrote President Stanford: “For the past two years I have been associated with Bache & Co. as a registered representative in their Miami office. During that time I have progressed so well that I would like to donate $1,500.“ Answered Dr. Stanford: “I can think of no better way any alumnus A an institution could express appreciation for assistance he received when he was a student at the University. I know that some fortunate student who receives the help you are providing will be as grateful as you are.“ The money will go to a finance major studying for a Master’s degree. Dr. W. Scott Mason, English, will be associate chairman of the panel on “Contemporary Literature of the Pacific Ocean“ at the 57th annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of English in Honolulu, Nov. 24... Meyer B. Marks, M.D., clinical associate professor of pediatrics, presented a paper, “Common Allergic Respiratory Tract Stigmata of Childhood“ at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Washington, D.C., recently... Sorrel S. Resnik, M.D., clinical instructor of dermatology, gave a paper, “Melasma and Other Skin Manifestations Resulting from Oral Contraceptives“ at the 39th anniversary program of the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological Society in Boston Nov. 1... Dr. M. Robert Allen, dean, Continuing Education, discussed “Education for the Urban Crisis“ for the National Council of Negro Women... Eugene Massin, art, was featured in the Miami Herald’s “Tropic“ Sunday magazine Nov. 5 in an article by Robert Hardin entitled, “Eugene Massin—Portrait of The Artist as a Huge Success.” The story was accompanied by reproductions of many of his works... Dr. Albert M. Ivanoff, foreign languages, presented his lecture and slides on “The Soviet Union and its Satellites“ at Kinloch Junior High for the sixth consecutive year...
