SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff May 6, 1968 Voi. 8, No. 16 FACULTY PUBLIC LECTURE The first in a new series of UM com-SERIES UNDERWAY MAY 9 munity service lectures by distinguished faculty members will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9 in Brockway Lecture Hall, President Stanford announced. Eugene Mas sin, UM professor of art and internationally-known artist, will initiate the University of Miami Faculty Public Lecture Series with a talk on “Art Today —An Experience in Creative Options.“ Illustrated by color slides, the talk will be followed by a question and answer period. The public is cordially invited to attend without charge. Dr. Sidney W. Fox, director of the Institute of Molecular Evolution, is chairman of the Faculty Public Lecture Series. Members of the planning committee include President Stanford, Dr. John A. Harrison, dean of the Graduate School; Dr. William L. Nyhan, chairman of pediatrics, and Dr. John H. Knoblock, assistant professor of history. DR. LOW NAMED TO Dr. Emmet F. Low, Jr., associate dean, SUCCEED DR, OWRE College of Arts and Sciences, and pro- fessor and former chairman of mathematics, has been named to succeed Dr. J. Riis Owre as associate dean of the faculties. On June 1 Dr. Owre will drop administrative status for the single academic title of professor. Dr. Low holds a B.S. degree from Stetson, his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Florida. Before joining the UM in 1955, Dr. Low was an aeronautical research scientist with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field, Va. DR. DUNCAN A. HOLADAY Dr. Duncan A. Holaday has joined the JOINS MEDICAL FACULTY UM School of Medicine faculty as di- rector of research and inhalation therapy in the department of anesthesiology. Dr. Holaday comes here from Chicago where he served since 1959 as professor of surgery (anesthesiology), University of Chicago School of Medicine and as head of the section of anesthesiology, University of Chicago Clinics. From 1950 to 1958 he served as director of research, Dept, of Anesthesiology, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Dr. Holaday, 51, is married and father of five children. GALBRAITH. MITCHELL John Galbraith, for 32 years manager of v JHANGES ANNOUNCED the UM Bookstore, will give up active management of the bookstore June 1 and devote full-time to the post of assistant business manager for auxiliary affairs. Galbraith has held both titles since June, 1966. George H. Mitchess, assistant bookstore manager since Sept. 1966, will become manager and report to Galbraith. Dr. Waino W. Suojanen, chairman, management, has been named as a consultant to James E. Webb, head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He will serve on a panel to review the agency’s pattern of administration... Dr. Taylor R. Alexander, botany, gave a paper, ‘'Effects of Hurricane Betsy on the Southeastern Saline Everglades —A Two-Year Study“ at the Southeastern Biologists Association meeting at the University of Georgia last month... Dr. Alma W. David, education, attended the conference of the Southern Association on Children Under Six in Birmingham, Ala. recently. She is President-Elect of the association and program chairman for the 1969 Conference... Calvin Leonard, acting chairman, human relations, and Dr. Bernard R. Black, education, spent two days at Furman University, Greenville, S. C., working with student leaders and the personnel deans’ staff. Dr. Black gave a paper on “Signs of the Times,” related the contents to student government responsibilities... Dr. William L. Nyhan, chairman, pediatrics, gave the Waldo Nelson Lectures at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children at Temple University, Philadelphia. His topics were “Hyperuricemia in Childhood” and “Recent Advances in Hyperglycinemia.“... Dr. William J. Harrington, chairman, dept, of medicine, has been invited to deliver a paper, “Immunity and Cancer,” at the First Annual John F. Kennedy Symposium on Recent Significant Developments in Medicine and Surgery at Science Park, Boston, May 9. Other participants include cardiac surgeons Dr. Christian Barnard and Dr. Michael E. Debakey and cardiologist Dr. Paul Dudley White...
