UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Office of Public Information May 16 1966 Voi. 6, No. 16 TWO IN MEDICINE RECEIVE CAREER AWARD Two members of the School of Medicine __________________________ have received the highly prized Research Career Development Award of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. They are Dr. Seymour Joffe, associate professor of neurology and assistant professor of biochemistry, and Dr. Douglas H. Sandberg, assistant professor of pediatrics. The awards, which generally run from five to ten years, provide the full salary of the recipients to the university, and make it possible for them to devote their major efforts to research and to the direction and training of students preparing for a research career. Dr. Joffe holds a medical degree from New York University and has completed the requirements for a second doctorate, in biochemistry, which he expects to receive from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the fall. He joined theUM faculty last September. Dr. Sandberg, who received his bachelor's degree from UM in 1951, holds a medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. He joined the UM faculty in 1963. Dr. Joffe and Dr. Sandberg join four other UM medical faculty members and two biologists in the College of Arts and Sciences as recipients of the Research Career Development Award. BANK ESTABLISHES LIVING MEMORIAL The Board of Directors of the First ____________________ National Bank of Miami has established a living memorial in memory of their late chairman, Comer J. Kimball, who died March 29. A donation has been made to the University to establish the Comer J. Kimball Memorial Scholarship Fund. A check for the bank's initial contribution of $5,200 was presented to President Henry King Stanford by Harry Hood Bassett, First National chairman of the board and president. It is anticipated that annual contributions will be made to the Fund by the bank and that income from the Fund will be granted in the form of an annual scholarship to a financially needy undergraduate student. GREENFIELD NAMED TO GRADUATE POST President Stanford has announced the _____________________ appointment of Dr. Leonard J. Greenfield as Associate Dean of the Graduate School, effective June 1. Now associate professor of marine science i chairman of that department, Dr. Greenfield joined the Institute Marine Science in 1959 after receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University. The appointment will enable Dr. Carroll V. Truss to return to teaching and research in psychology as he requested last year. Dr. Truss has served as associate dean since 1959. Dr. Edwin S. Iversen, associate professor of marine science, will succeed Dr. Leonard as chairman of that department.
