Rose, University of Alabama president, was principal speaker at the Law School’s Homecoming Breakfast... “MAY YOUR HEARTS BE MERRY...” —PRESIDENT STANFORD “As the season approaches when men of good will everywhere join in the universal hope for Peace on Earth, we become more contemplative of our roles in this complex society. It is a time of wonder and a time of thankfulness, a time in which we ask ourselves both Whither? and Why? “I hope you share my conviction that educators — and those who assist them — serve mankind in highest measure. For ours is the task of freeing men’s mind from ignorance and prejudice, of keeping ablaze the spirit in Everyman which lights his way through life. “This is also the season to be merry. And if I may paraphrase one of the Proverbs, May your hearts be merry, your countenances cheerful, as we look forward to another year of renewed dedication in the service of mankind.” DEAN OWRE MOVES UP Dr. J. Riis Owre, Graduate School dean AS NEW DEAN NAMED since 1947, will step up to the post of Associate Dean of the Faculties, June 1. Succeeding him as Dean of the Graduate School will be Dr. Armin H. Gropp, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida who has been in charge of the college’s graduate studies and research program since 1959. Commenting on the appointments, President Stanford said: “Dean Owre will bring to his new position a thorough knowledge of the history and development of this institution and of its faculty and curriculum which is indispensable as we move forward in strengthening the quality of our faculty and teaching at all levels. While Dr. Gropp is by profession a physical and analytical chemist, he has a broad background and experience in the humanities. We are fortunate in being able to interest him in joining us as we proceed to expand our graduate and professional programs.” For Faculty and Staff December 16,1963 HAPPY Because of the upcoming holidays, the HOLIDAYS! next issue of Veritas will not appear until Jan. 6.
