For the Faculty, Staff and Friends of the University of Miami Voi. 20, No. 17 June 9, 1980 Whafs more fftiii than the first annual employees pieni«?? The second annual employees picnic, of course. UM staff members from all three campuses brought their friends and families to the home of Or and Mrs. Stanford for an afternoon of fun, food, music and games, Saturday, May 31/ "Mike Kovac thought of having the picnic last year,” said Or Stanford, "and we had such a good time that we thought it should become an annual event. Ruth and I love to entertain people at our home, and this event is especially for the members of our University staff.” The picnic was a cooperative effort of the UM administration through the office of personnel affairs and the A03-A05 Employee Organization. Or Roosevelt Thomas, director of personnel affairs, Pamela Layne, chairperson of the Employee Organization, and Mike Kovac, treasurer, coordinated the event. Once again Mike Kovac saved the day with his uncanny ability of soliciting donations of everything from food and beer to a piano. "Or Stanford asked me to organize the picnic one more time,” said Kovac. "I even came back early from my vacation, but it was worth it.” Mike, who’s worked as an electrician and assistant operations manager in physical plant, retired from the University, June 1, after 14 years of service. The afternoon was highlighted by the presentation of a plaque by Kovac to Or Stanford "in appreciation for his leadership and concern on behalf of the University A03-A05 employees.” The huge wooden plaque was hand carved by a former UM employee, Pancho Mas. Hundreds of signatures of University staff members surround the carved University seal. In addition to Mike Kovac, Pamela Layne and Roosevelt Thomas, volunteers came from all areas of the University to help out. Those delicious hamburgers were cooked by Jerry Praefke, carpentry, Or.
