SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff December 18, 1967 Volume 8, No. 7 THE MAILMAN FOUNDATION A South Florida financier - grand-GIVES UM MILLION DOLLARS father of a handicapped child - has presented the University of Miami with a gift of $1,018,000, thereby assuring construction of the University’s Facility for Study of Mental Retardation. Abraham Mailman of Hollywood made the award as a tribute to his 7-year-old granddaughter, Debra Jean (Debbie) Segal, through The Mailman Foundation. President Stanford announced the gift Dec. 8. The $1,018,000 rounds out the total needed to match a U.S. Public Health Service grant of $3,054,432 to build the Facility, dedicated to helping the mentally retarded through treatment and research and educating personnel to work in the field. Last month, the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Foundation awarded the UM a half-million dollar grant toward the $4,872,1575 Facility. Dade County provided the land, valued at $800,000. The 8-story tower will be called The Mailman Child Development Center and the annex, which will contain a school for the handicapped, The Debbie Institute. As a memorial to the late President, clinic and out-patient areas on the tower’s first and second floors will be named The John F. Kennedy Clinics. Construction of the tower and two-story annex is now scheduled to start late January, 1968 at NW 12th Avenue and 16th Terrace. Mr. Mailman came to South Florida 17 years ago. He is chairman of the board of Hollywood Bank and Trust Co. and Hollywood Hills Bank. DISTINGUISHED DIPLOMAT Hon. Foy D. Kohler, Deputy Under-TO JOIN UNIVERSITY SOON secretary of State and the former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, will join the UM’s Center for Advanced International Studies following his retirement from the State Department the end of this year, President Stanford announced. Ambassador Kohler, 59, has had a long and distinguished career in foreign service and has attained the highest rank available to a career diplomat in the State Department. Last year he was named Career Ambassador, a "five-star’ position. Dr. Stanford said, ""Mr. Kohler has not only had vast and intimate experience in the shaping and conduct of our foreign affairs, but also is one of the most knowledgeable men in the world with respect to the Soviet Union and the intricacies of its internal development and external relationships.” Dr. Mose L. Harvey, director of the Center, said Kohler’s main focus initially will relate to studies currently being carried out on Cuba. These studies involve the comparative situation of Cuba as 1 gainst other Communist countries, as well as the Cuban factor in U.S.-Soviet relations. A similar honor was accorded him by WIOD... A composition by Dr. John Butler, music, has been awarded the second prize of $75 in the 1967 composition contest sponsored by the Hartford, Conn, chapter of the American Guild of Organists... Dr. Arnold B. Cheyney, elementary education, spoke on ""Positiveness: An Educational Necessity” before theBethune-Cookman College faculty and students Nov. 10 in Daytona Beach. He addressed the Dade County Program Language Arts Teachers Nov. 20-22 on ""The Aesthetics of a Language Program.”... Dr. Eleanor M. Dillinger, elementary education, was recent speaker at a meeting of the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida. Her topic: ""Working Creatively with Children and Youth.”... Mary Spalding Sevitzky, music, will play an annual Christmas program, ""Music of the Season — Christmas Carols and Customs from Around the World” at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22 on WTHS-TV, Chan. 2, Miami. The program will also be telecast in Tampa, Gainesville, Jacksonville and Tallahassee. .. President Stanford spoke on world affairs at a meeting of the Florida-Colombia Alliance in Bar-ranquilla, Colombia on December 1... Dr. Ralph Harris, carilloneur, was in Largo, Fla. Dec. 10 to dedicate a new Schulmerich ""Americana” carillon, the same type on demonstration loan in the Merrick Building tower...
