SPEAKING OF PEOPLE Simon Hochberger, chairman, Mass Communications, has been elected national secretary of Kappa Tau Alpha, national society honoring scholarship in journalism, for 1968-1970. JULIUS SCHULTZ HEADS Dr. Julius Schultz, former research PAPANICOLAOU INSTITUTE professor of biochemistry at Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, was named director of the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute of Miami, effective January 1. He also became adjunct professor of pharmacology in the medical school. The Institute has been affiliated with the UM School of Medicine since December, 1963. The Institute directorship had been vacant since the death here in 1962 of George N. Papanicolaou, at the age of 79. Dr. Schultz, 53, is engaged in cancer research on a basic level, dealing with the protein make-up of enzymes in white blood cells. His work has led to new knowledge of the chemistry of a certain type of leukemia, chloroma. He was educated at Cornell and the University of Michigan (B.S. in 1936) and was graduated in Feb. 1940 with a Ph.D. in biological chemistry. His entire professional career has been devoted to research. Prior to going to Hahnemann as a research associate professor in 1957, he was research biochemist at the Einstein Medical Center, and for seven years was at Temple University as principal investigator at the Research Institute and assistant professor of Research Biochemistry at the Fels Institute. UNIVERSITY ELIGIBLE The University is eligible to partici- FOR PROJECT 'THEMIS’ pate in the Department of Defense Project THEMIS, a “Center for Excellence’ 9 program designed to establish university programs in specialized areas relevant to the Defense mission. All research is unclassified and projects are funded at a level approximating $200,000 per year for three years. Subject areas of interest to Defense are Detection, Surveillance, Navigation and Control, Energy and Power, Information-Processing Systems, Vehicle Engineering, Materials Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Medical Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences. For information, contact Dean of Research Coordination. DR. CLARK E. MYERS NAMED Dr. Clark E. Myers, dean of the BUSINESS DEAN AT EMORY School of Business Administration at the University of Miami since 1961, will become Dean of Emory University's School of Business Administration effective July 1. Dean Myers was lecturer in business administration at the Harvard Graduate School of Business before coming to UM, and earlier had been dean of the Ohio University College of Commerce. He holds degrees from the University of Kansas and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Dr. Paul S. Salter, geography, gave a paper, “The Mango Industry of South Florida’' at the recent southeast divisional meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Gainesville... Burton J. Goldstein. M.D., chief, division of research, psychiatry, gave a paper, "Clinical Efficacy of the Butyrophenones" for the American College of Neuropsychophar-macology in Puerto Rico... Victor Stern and Juan Mercadal. music, have been invited to play a program of viola and guitar works for the regional meeting of the National Music Teachers Association in New Orleans Feb. 14... Dr. Emmett A. Betts, Reading Research Laboratory, was elected president of Simplified Spelling Association (U.S.A.) at a recent N.Y. meeting, where he participated in planning a research project on initial teaching alphabets for beginners in reading. He will also serve as a consultant Jan. 25-26 to Brig. Gen. W.W. Wilcox, national commander, Civil Air Patrol, USAF Auxiliary, Maxwell AFB, on the establishment of a National CAP Academy... Dr. Billy J. Paschal, education, spoke on “Goals for Space Age Education" at the Kappa Delta Pi banquet, attended the Phi Delta Kappa conference in Memphis ... An article, “Executive Secretaries Need a 'Plus’ Quality," by Irwin H. Lesser, business education, has been accepted by THE SECRETARY, publication of the National Secretaries Association...
