SPEAKING OF PEOPLE f HE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Voi. 9, No. 8 January 6, 1969 NEW CURRICULUM OFFERED A new curriculum in Systems IN SYSTEMS ANALYSIS Analysis is being offered by the UM School of Engineering. Administered by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Systems Analysis, it leads to the Bachelor of Science degree. The new curriculum and modification of the department title from Department of Industrial Engineering was announced by President Stanford following approval by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Joseph J. Moder, department chairman, said the new curriculum represents a dramatic shift in engineering education to prepare the student to take a more active role in the solution of pressing urban socio-economic problems as well as business and industrial problems. Systems analysis, he said, may be thought of as applied problemsolving — from the inception of the problem to the implementation of a solution to the problem. Students will utilize the new IBM 360/Mod 65 ‘third generation’ computer system to be installed in March in the Computing Center. MIAMI BUSINESSMAN ESTABLISHES Because of his interest in CIVIL ENGINEERING ENDOWMENT conservation of natural resources, a Miami businessman has established an endowment for the civil engineering department at the UM. Income from the endowment by Stanley Glaser, president of Sea-coast Appliance Distributors, Inc., will be used to make an annual award to encourage undergraduate engineering projects and papers concerned with preserving and improving man’s environment and the quality of living and conservation of natural resources. Mr. Glaser is a director of the University of Miami Citizens Board, a member of the Society of University Founders, and was a volunteer consultant during the study project for development of the Center for Urban Affairs. ASHE SCHOLARSHIP Members of the Panhellenic Council have FUND GETS $650 contributed $650 to the Bowman F. Ashe Memorial Scholarship Fund at the UM, according to James B. Alinder, Jr., director of the Office of Financial aid. Since its inception in 1953, the fund honoring the memory of the university’s first president has provided scholarships for 83 worthy students who have maintained a minimum average of 3.0. Panhellenic ( uncil members have contributed regularly to the fund since its establishment. UNIVERSITY GETS $2,500 The UM has received an unrestricted GIFT FROM AMERICAN OIL gift of $2,500 from American Oil Foundation. The funds will be applied toward the University’s Golden Anniversary Development Program. Victor H. Whitten. M.D., clinical professor of dermatology, was elected vice president of the 3,000-member American Academy of Dermatology at the professional organization's annual meeting in Chicago... Lillian Gong.M.D.. instructor in pediatrics in School of Medicine and associate director of health services in the Comprehensive Health Care Program, has been selected for listing in “Outstanding Young Women of America.’’Selection is based on outstanding accomplishment in community service, in religious and political activities and in professional endeavors... UM men taking part in the Conference on Physical Principles of Biological Membranes at the Center for Theoretical Studies Dec. 18 -20 were Dr. Behram Kursunoglu. director, CTS; Dr. Sidney W. Fox. director, Institute of Molecular Evolution; Dr. Morris Rockstein. acting chairman, physiology, and Dr. Walter Drost-Hansen. chemical physics, IMS. Dr. Armin H. Gropp. vice president for academic affairs and a member of the CTS Scientific Council, welcomed the 40 distinguished conferees from Europe, the Middle East and the United States... Mrs. Julia Morton, director, Morton Collectanea, was initiated honorary member of Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic fraternity. She spoke on “From Hawaii to Vietnam Searching for Survival Fare.’’ PKP initiated 52 juniors, seniors and graduate students. Dr. Melanie Rosbor-ough. professor emeritus, is president of the UM chapter...
