A Publication for Faculty and Staff of the University of Miami Volume 17, Number 21 July 11,1977 Norman G. Einspruch Arthur W. Brown Einspruch Named Dean of SEED Dr. Norman G. Einspruch, assistant vice president of Texas Instruments, Incorporated, Dallas, has accepted the appointment as dean of the University’s School of Engineering and Environmental Design, effective August 1. He will succeed Dr. Jerome Catz, associate dean, who has been serving as acting dean since August 1975. In making the appointment, on the recommendation of a faculty search committee, Dr. Clyde J. Wingfield, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said: “We are delighted that Dr. Einspruch will join us as dean. His proven skills in both research and management will enable us to strengthen further our growing research and teaching programs in the various engineering disciplines.’’ Dr. Einspruch, who was 45 on June 27, has been associated with Texas Instruments since 1959 when he received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Brown University. He earned his M.S. in physics from the University of Colorado in 1955 and his B.A., also in physics, from Rice University in 1953. He joined the corporation as a laboratory scientist on the technical staff of TI’s Central Research Laboratories and advanced rapidly in both research and management responsibilities. By 1972, he was director of the five laboratories performing research and development by staff scientists and engineers in disciplines including electrical and mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Dr. Einspruch was named assistant vice president and manager of corporate development in 1975, with oversight responsibility for the corporation’s research and development budget. Continuing as assistant vice president, in 1976 he moved into responsibilities in the field of consumer products. He is the author of more than 50 publications in technical journals and is a Continued to Page 2 UM First Summer Session Enrollment Up, Hours Decline While first summer session enrollment was up 1 per cent this year compared to 1976, the total credit hours declined 3 per cent, Registrar George Smith announced. 29 Students Placed On Strict Probation Following Arrests Of the 31 UM students arrested April 20 for violation of the University’s policy on mass assembly and demonstrations, 29 have been placed on strict disciplinary probation until the end of the 1978 spring semester. One student already on probation was placed on final disciplinary probation and one student has not yet had a hearing because of undergoing surgery shortly after the arrest. Continued to Page 4 Total enrollment was 4,605 compared to 4,545 for last year. Total credit hours, excluding law and medicine, were 16,671 compared to 17,212 in 1976. The greatest enrollment increases were in the Pre-MBA Program, up from 60 students to 100, and in education, 374 students compared to 255 last year. Gains were also recorded in business administration, engineering and environmental design, general students and continuing studies. Enrollment was down substantially in nursing, 22 students compared to 40 last year, and music, 67 compared to 108. Moderate declines were in arts and sciences and the Graduate School. Information about the second summer session (June 28-August 3) will be printed in the August 26 issue of Veritas. Brown Is Appointed Arts & Sciences Dean Dr. Arthur W. Brown, dean of liberal arts and sciences at Baruch College of the City University of New York since 1972, will join the University August 1 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He will succeed Dr. Clarence G. Stuck-wisch who has served as interim dean since last September while continuing his position as dean of the Graduate School. In making the appointment, on the recommendation of a faculty search committee, Dr. Clyde J. Wingfield, provost and executive vice presodent for academic affairs, said: “We are fortunate in being able to bring to the University as dean of our largest college a man who has proven himself as a teacher, research scholar and administrator.” Dr. Brown holds his Ph.D. in American literature and culture from Syracuse University, his M.A. in English from Cornell and his A.B. in classics from the University of Scranton, which in 1965 awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. He also holds the honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Hofstra University. Dr. Brown will bring to his post 25 years of full-time teaching at Syracuse and Adelphi universities, primarily in the fields of American literature and 19th century intellectual history. He is the author of two books on William Ellery Channing, another on Margaret Fuller and is editor of 38 volumes in the World Leaders (formerly Great American Thinkers) series published by G.K. Hall, Boston. Dr. Brown entered the administrative field when he joined Adelphi in 1963 as professor and chairman of the English department and director of the Institute of the Humanities and two years later was named president. He resigned the presidency in 1967 to become dean of faculties and dean of the Graduate School of Fordham University where he later was named vice president for academic affairs. In 1969 he left Fordham to become president of Marygrove College in Detroit, Mich., where he remained until he joined Baruch in 1972. Tuition Remission Forms Are Due Immediately Tuition remission request forms are due immediately for those persons seeking tuition remission for the fall semester (August 25 - December 14). The tuition remission request form is a general form which must be requisitioned from Printing Services. The form covers everyone eligible for tuition remission with the exception of dependent children of A01, A02 and A06 personnel. Forms for these dependents may be obtained from Employee Benefits. Man of La Mancha Juan Somaza, who plays the major character Cervantes / Quixote in Dale Wasserman’s internationally acclaimed musical, “Man of La Mancha,“transforms himself from soldier of fortune turned novelist into “Knight of the Woeful Countenance” with the help of Sancho Panza, played by Jim Puig. The musical will run from July 13-17, 20-24 and 27-30 at 8 each evening in the Ring Theater. Tickets are available at the box office, which is open daily from 1 to 4 pan.
