A prívate, independent, international university An equal opportunity employer Staff of the University of Miami Volume 18, Number 2 September 9, 1977 First Anniversary Celebrated at BPEI/ABLEH Photos by Joseph Goren and Maggie Blake Top photo: Aurora Iglesias, receptionist at BPEI/ABLEH, receives key chain memento from Bernard C. Scott, chief administrative officer, while Dr. Edward W. D. Norton, medical director, looks on. Other photos are exterior scenes of the hospital. A week long anniversary celebration is ending today at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital. Faculty and staff are marking the first anniversary of admitting the first inpatient to the new facility on September 7, 1976. During the week, patients’ food trays were decorated with carnations. The 350 UM employees also received carnations, key chain mementos and feasted on a special lobster luncheon and birthday cake. BPEI/ABLEH is headed by Dr. Edward W.D. Norton, chairman of the University’s department of ophthalmology. Bernard C. Scott serves as its chief administrative officer. When its doors opened to outpatients in July 1976, ABLEH represented one of the most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the world. Patients continue to be referred to the hospital from the southeastern United States, Central and South America, parts of Europe, Asia and the Mid-East. More than 42,000 patients annually are seen in the center’s clinics where a variety of eye diseases are treated. More than 1,300 patients have undergone surgical procedures in the six operating rooms equipped with modern instruments specifically designed for ABLEH. General Faculty Meeting Planned For Sept. 18 President Henry King Stanford has invited all faculty members, departmental chairpersons, deans and administrators to attend a general faculty meeting September 18 at 8 p.m. in the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall. All those attending have been invited to gather at the Rathskeller following the meeting for conversation and refreshments. Structure Change Is Approved For 1977-78 Ombudsmen Program A major change to the 1977-78 Ombudsmen Program recommended by the Council of Ombudsmen to President Henry King Stanford has been approved. A change in the structure of the council includes the naming of one ombudsman to serve the academic affairs division. The prior policy of naming associate and assistant deans was eliminated to avoid the possibility of conflicts of interest. The Ombudsmen Program began at the UM seven years ago as a means of allowing students to redress their grievances and solve problems. Readily identifiable persons are appointed annually by President Stanford to serve as his representatives to hear student complaints of unjust or confusing conditions. Council members are Rick Artman, student affairs, 284-4922, chairperson; Bryce Dunham, President’s Office, 284-5155; Chris Robinson, academic affairs, 284-3356; Dr. John Robinson, School of Medicine, 547-6811; Dr. Richard Ruch, administration and finance, 284- 6100; and Dr. Warren Wisby, RSMAS, 350-7356. While neither charged with making nor overriding existing UM policy, ombudsmen have the responsibility of interpreting policy to students and recommending changes. Do You Have A Question? Do you want to know something about the University and how it functions? About your rights and obligations as a member of the University community? About UM policy and procedures? If your question is of interest to others, Veritas will attempt to answer it in print, as part of a new feature called, “What’s Going On Here?” Questions may be submitted by any member of the UM community, at any of the three campuses, but should be primarily of interest to staff and faculty members. Questions should be sent to “What’s Going On Here?”, Veritas, Ponce Building, Main Campus. Non-Profit Organization U. S. POSTAGE PAID Miami, Florida PERMIT No. 438 For Official Use Only
