Kohler examine the sculpture “Unity,” by Virginio Ferrari, at the entrance to CAIS’s new quarters. The sculpture honors Mrs. Albert Pick, Jr. UM Sea Grant Program Publishes Marine Science Manu,Field Guide Conference Deals With Art Therapy The First Florida Conference on Art Therapy was held on campus last week for the purpose of determining the need for establishing a graduate program in art therapy at the University of Miami, and determining the community support for such_a program. The conference was presented by the School of Education and the School of Continuing Studies in cooperation with the American Art Therapy Association. Dr. Marion Jefferson of the School of Education, was the coordinator. “The American Art Therapy Association requires graduate training in art therapy as one criterion for professional registration,” said Dr. Jefferson. “The closest school which offers such training is the University of Louisville in Kentucky.” UM now offers a B.Ed. degree with preart therapy emphasis. During the conference, Dr. Jefferson presented a proposed master’s level professional art therapy program for review. She is looking toward the mental health fields for possible outside funding of such a program. Seventeen mental health, child welfare and community agencies helped sponsor the conference. Among the participants in the conference were Dr. Robert Hendricks, associate dean for human relations and Dr. Lou Kleinman, dean, School of Education, and Constance Willeford, assistant professor, music therapy, School of Music. Grant Awarded For Boating Study A grant of $44,489 for an analysis of recreational boating in Dade County associated with the design and operation of three new county marinas was announced recently by the Metropolitan Dade County Park and Recreation Department. The grant was made to Dr. Bruce Austin, of the UM Sea Grant Program. Sea Grant provided $10,100 in matching funds. Austin said he will be helped by three graduate students “and considerable volunteer help.” In addition to marina site and design Austin said his research would consider composition of recreational boats, destination studies and an assessment of the economic impact of recreational boating in Dade County. Austin said his activities would cover two special topics : sport fishing and hurricane evacuation for recreational, boats. UM scientists are authors of two books in marine science which have just been published by the Sea Grant Program. Dr. Won Tack Yang’s A Manual for Large-Tank Culture of Penaeid Shrimp to the Postlarval Stages is addressed to the shrimp farming industry. It reports on studies of techniques for culturing tiny shrimp eggs to the early stages of shrimp-hood when the animals may be released safely in ponds where they grow to marketable size. Dr. Yang, formerly at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, is now stationed in Indonesia with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. A Guide to the Sea Grasses of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Region, by Roger Hanlon and Dr. Gilbert Voss, is the fourth in the series of field guides issued by Sea Grant. It offers fishermen, the general public and conservation personnel easily usable, nontechnical, well-illustrated guides for identification of plants and animals found in this region. Mr. Hanlon and Dr. Voss both work in the RSMAS division of biology and living resources. Both publications are for sale by Sea Grant Information Services—the manual for $3.00 and the field guide for $1.25. Toys for Tots Donations Accepted There are only 10 days left to donate toys to the University’s Toys for Tots drive, now underway on all three campuses. All toys donated will be distributed by the local Marine Corps Reserve Unit at its annual Christmas party for needy children. For information about the toy collection post nearest to you, call Gertrude Russell, campus coordinator, at 284-2371. Notice.*. The next Faculty Senate meeting will be held December 15 at 3 p.m. in the Law School auditorium, room 129.' Ceremonies dedicating the new quarters of the UM Center for Advanced International Studies as Albert Pick Hall will be held Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. Formerly a fraternity house, the building at 1531 Brescia Avenue on main campus was redesigned and refurbished with a grant of $230,000 from Albert Pick, Jr., chairman of the board of Pick Hotels, Inc. Architect for the project was Ralph Warburton, professor of architecture. Highlighting the entrance to the building is a sculpture by the distinguished Chicago artist, Virginio Ferrari, titled “Unity,” which will be dedicated to Mrs. Albert (Corinne) Pick, Jr. Participating in the ceremonies will be President Stanford, who will welcome invited guests, including the consular corps of Greater Miami; Dr. Mose L. Harvey, director of the Center; and Mr. Pick. A reception and open house hosted by the Center staff will follow the dedication. Turkish Government Awards Veziroglu Top Science Prize Dr. T. Nejat Veziroglu, associate dean for research in the School of Engineering and Environmental Design, has received the Turkish Presidential Science Award for 1975. Dr. Veziroglu, who is also director of UM’s Clean Energy Research Institute, was cited for his work on interstitial heat transfer and two-phase flow instabilities in nuclear reactors. 1 He received the award in ceremonies in Ankara, Turkey, Nov. 12, and gave an address entitled “The World Energy Crisis and Solutions.”
