SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER A textbook, “Modern Statistics for Behavorial Sciences" by Dr. Daniel S, Lordahl. psychology, was published last month by The Ronald Press Company, New York City. The book provides a thorough treatment of analysis of variance techniques... ( May 1, 1967 Vol. 7, No. 16 JOHN GALBRAITH NAMED John Galbraith, manager of the UM "MANAGER OF THE YEAR" Bookstore, was named "Manager of the Year" by the National Association of College Stores at its 44th convention at the Deauville Hotel, Miami Beach, April 26. Galbraith is a past president of NACS and retired dean of the NACS Management Seminar. He is the man who "created" the UM Bookstore in 1936, a year after he enrolled as a botany student here. The bookstore in the 30s was just a hole in the wall of the Anastasia Building. With time out for military service in the Navy for World War II and Korea, he watched the bookstore grow into one of the 50 largest in the country. It is considered by Galbraith to be the "best bookstore -- bar none — south of Washington, D.C." Galbraith's wife, Betty, has worked as acquisitions clerk in the Otto G. Richter Library for nine years. They have three children. ARCHIBALD MACLEISH Poet-dramatist Archibald MacLeish, SPEAKER HERE MAY 10 three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, will speak at the UM's eighth annual Academic Honors Day, Wednesday, May 10. MacLeish will read and discuss his own poetry. The academic achievement of outstanding UM students will be recognized at the 8 p.m. ceremonies, which are open to the public. They will be held in the cafeteria of the Whitten Memorial Student Union. SINGING HURRICANES The Singing Hurricanes have cut their MAKE FIRST PLATTER first record. Produced by UM Records, it's called "The Singing Hurricanes,.. Off Campus" and has 31 of the songs they performed in their recent Far East tour entertaining servicemen and on previous tours to Europe, Greenland, Labrador and Newfoundland. The group is directed by Glenn Draper, director of choral music. The record, available in monaural and stereo, is for sale only in the UM Bookstore. UM BIOCHEMIST Dr. John M. Marsh, biochemistry, has GETS TOP AWARD received the Research Career Develop- ment Award of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for continuation of his basic molecular research in the function of hormones. Dr. March, 35, received the award in recognition of outstanding originality and competence in science related to health, the NIH citation read. He is the 12th member of the UM faculty to be so honored. The award generally runs from five to ten years and provides the full salary of the recipient to the University. It makes it possible for him to devote his major efforts to research and the direction and training of students preparing for research careers. Dr. R. M. Iverson. LQB, presented a talk concerning his research in nuclear-cytoplasmic interrelationships before the Department of Biology, State University of New York at Buffalo... Dr. S. Fred Singer, atmospheric sciences, was representative of the International Astronautical Federation at the 5th session of the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, Switzerland... Dr. William L. Nyhan, chairman, pediatrics, was awarded a Commemorative Medallion by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. The award is in recognition of his achievements in medicine. Dr, Nyhan received his M.D. degree from Columbia... A paper, "An Explanation of the Inhibition of Root Growth caused by Indole-3-Acetic Acid" by A. V. Chadwick. medicine, and Dr. Stanley P. Burg, biology, has been published in Plant Physiology... Jim Higman and Bernie Yokel. Fishery Sciences, IMS, attended the annual executive committee meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute in Denver... "Microbiology of Oceans and Estuaries by Dr. E. J. Ferguson Wood, marine microbiology, IMS, has just been published by Elsevier Publishing Co., Amsterdam, The Netherlands... Karl S. Pond, foreign languages, gave a paper, "Objectives-Testing and Motivation" at the meeting of the National Association of Laboratory Directors in Atlantic City...
