Dr. Eveleen Lorton, chairman of the UM Women’s Commission, presented President Stanford with an inscribed marble-based paperweight “in recognition of his support of women at the University of Miami and in commemoration of International Women’s Year.” The paperweight bears the symbol of International Women’s Year, standing for peace, development and equality. The presentation was made March 14 during the Women’s Commission’s annual luncheon which featured Dr. Bernice Sandler as principal speaker. Senate Representatives Invited to Board Meetings In line with the policy of effective communication between the Board of Trustees and the Faculty Senate, President Stanford has replied to the Senate’s request that representatives be permitted to attend various Board committee meetings and that certain minutes and agendas be made available. Dr. Stanford relayed the following action taken by the Executive Committee: • Faculty Senate Liaison Representative Daryl Nagel and Senate Chairman Gary Salzman will continue to be invited to attend regular meetings of the full Board of Trustees and will be sent advance agendas of these meetings, as well as any advance reports of Executive and Budget Review & Finance Committees which are sent to the trustees. • Ms. Nagel and Dr. Salzman will be invited, at the discretion of the President, to attend various meetings of the Academic Affairs Committee, the Executive Committee and the Budget Review & Finance Committee. • Dr. Bennett Sallman, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, will be invited, at the discretion of the President, to attend various meetings of the Budget Review & Finance Committee. t Minutes of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees will be sent on a regular basis to Dr. Salzman, except for the minutes of those meetings at which individual cases dealing with the award of tenure and promotion are discussed. Wilson Hicks Conference Revived The department of communications has announced that it will proceed with the 19th Annual Wilson Hicks Conference on Visual Communications April 3-4 at Beaumont Cinema. The conference was recently cancelled by the office of development affairs. Michael Carlebach, program director, communications, announces that guest speakers for the conference will include: John Durniak, picture editor of Time; David Eisendrath, photographic technical consultant; Leonard Stern, AV supervisor, Western Electric; Chuck Cyberski, who operates a TV news department using super-8 film; Dallas Kinney, Pulitzer Prize winner in photography; Cole Weston, son of photographer Edward Weston; Ken Heyman, who worked with Margaret Mead on the book, Family of Man; Jill Krementz, freelance photographer; Eddie Adams, Time photographer; Ray Fisher, local freelance photographer; and Michael O’Brien, photographer for The Miami News, (continued on page 2) r ventos Volume 15, Number 25 March 24, 1975 university of miomi coral gobies florido Evaluation Center Established The National Center for the Evaluation of Educational Materials has been established in the School of Education, Dean Lou Kleinman announced. The purpose of the Center is to function as a consultation service to producers and consumers of educational materials,” said Dean Kleinman. Designed to be self-supporting, the Center was conceived by Professor Arnold Cheyney, who will serve as director, and Professor Mark Murfin, chairman, department of elementary education. The staff of the Center will be the education faculty at UM, plus professors in related disciplines A faculty member will be assigned to certain projects based on his particular areas of expertise. “Estimates are that more than 300,000 print and non-print instructional materials are available commercially to schools and teachers in the U.S.,” said Dr. Cheyney. “Few of these materials have been subjected to professional evaluation to determine their effectiveness on the students. The National Center for the Evaluation of Educational Materials will be able to evaluate materials to determine whether they do what they are designed to do, and whether the children can understand it, and relate to the materials.” He continued: “Educational materials are expensive. Before school systems or other agencies invest in such materials, they should know if those materials will fill their needs and if they will work for their own particular students or clientele.” Some of the services to be offered by the Center are: • Design and development of materials of instruction. • Field testing and validation of proposed materials. • Consultation on evaluation of designs Dr. Arnold Cheyney and interpretation of results. o On-site consultation for the establishment of local material validation operations. o Provision of services for educators and researchers in all phases of instructional activities. In addition to school systems, the Center’s clients will be publishers and manufacturers of educational materials who may want to evaluate the effectiveness of certain learning materials and systems before undertaking production. “The establishment of the Center is one of the most important new developments in the School of Education, and is characteristic of the innovative drive of the faculty of the School,” said Dean Kleinman. Warburton Resigns Post Professor Ralph Warburton has resigned his administrative post as chairman of the department of architecture, architectural engineering and planning in the School of Engineering and Environmental Design, effective May 31. In accepting Professor Warburton’s request to return to full time teaching, Dr. Howard P.
