DEADLINE FOR REQUESTS - To prevent last minute delays and confusion, the Budget Committee has established a new deadline for submission of requests for research grants and other income-producing activities* Effective immediately, such requests will not be approved by any University officer unless submitted 15 days prior to the date of postmark required by the funding agency. FLORAL REMEMBRANCES - The Budget Committee requests a change in the custom of expressing sympathy by floral tributes to the families of deceased faculty and staff members. In place of various departments sending flowers, it is requested that interested departments hereafter.consult with the President's office which will arrange for proper floral remembrance on behalf of the University and the interested departments. NEW HEAD OFFICE STAFFER - Mrs. Silvia Dalmau, a UM alumna, has joined the UM administration staff as secretary to the executive vice president. Born in Havana, Mrs. Dalmau is a graduate of Miami Senior High School and studied one year at UM, majoring in languages. SELF-EVALUATING UC - Dean Paul K. Vonk of University College has appointed Don Clark and Morgan Kelly, UM graduate students, to study the possibility of a continuing self-evaluation program in UC. CAMPUS BEAUTY RECOGNIZED - National recognition of the functional beauty of UM buildings is accorded in a project of the Carnegie Study of the Arts in the United States. Color slides of the Student Union and a group of student housing apartment buildings are included in a group prepared by the Art dept, of the University of Georgia for distribution to educational institutions. NEED SPACE? THEN SPEAK UPI -The building program now underway at UM will provide many new facilities. Consequently, certain spaces will be up for reassignment. Those who feel that they need additional space to meet instructional, research or office needs are requested to set forth their requirements in writing to the executive vice president. Many of the requirements then may be coordinated into an effective program for utilization of all space available. STUDENT EDITORS ATTEND POW-WOW - Off to Chicago Nov. 21 are UM's student editors, Bernard Weiner, Hurricane; Gerald L. Gardner, Ibis; and Byron T. Scott, Tempo, to join more than 1,000 other student editors for the annual Associated Collegiate Press conference. Also attending is Wilson Hicks, supervisor of student publications, who will appear on a panel discussing the use of color photos in yearbooks. AID TO MARINE SCIENCE RECOGNIZED - To Michael Lerner, honorary UM alumnus, internationally famed angler and long-time leader in marine research, the International Oceanographic Foundation last week presented the first of its gold medals to be awarded annually to the sport fisherman judged to have accomplished the most for marine science. UM awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science to Lerner in June, 1952. Among the distinguished guests assembled at the Deauville to honor Medalist Lerner were Ross Leffler, assistant secretary of the Department of the Interior, and Dr. Albert E. Parr, director of the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. F. G. Walton Smith, UM Marine Laboratory director, was master of ceremonies. The International Oceanographic Foundation was meeting with the 13th annual session of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute held under the auspices of the Marine Lab. SPEAKING OF THE FACULTY - Dr. Melanie R. Rosborough, professor of German, has been elected treasurer of the South Atlantic Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German — Dr. Sydney W. Head, radio-TV-film chairman, who doubles in nautical brass as owner-skipper of "Ballerina," a 26-foot ketch, fires both barrels in the November issue of "Yachting." He is author of a major article describing the lively ocean dance which "Ballerina" led him and Professor Luis Rivas on a cruise around the Bahamas and a shorter piece telling how he and his crew kept fed and watered at sea — Excerpts from James C. Vadakin’s book "Family Allowances" (UM Press, 1958) are included in a new „ volume of selected readings, entitled "Social Security; Programs, Problems and Policies," edited by two University of Michigan faculty members, published by Richard D. Irwin, Inc. -- John M. Dyer, marketing professor, and advisor on international trade to the International Affairs dept, of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce attended the 47th national trade convention in New York last week -- Norman R. Buchan, journalism professor, is serving for the fifth year as one of the judges of the school press project sponsored by the Dade County Tuberculosis Association — Dean John Bitter will represent the School of Music at the annual meeting of the National Association of Schools of Music in Chicago. Dean Bitter is regional vice president of the NASM.
