Lawson, acting dean and chairman of the department of pediatrics, will leave UM’s Medical School to fulfill a joint appointment as chairman of pediatrics at the Northwestern University School of Medicine and as chief of staff of the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Lawson, who holds his bachelor’s and MD degrees from Harvard, has been chairman of the department of pediatrics since 1954 and acting dean since last July. In his letter of resignation Oct. 31, said Dr. Lawson: "I have great faith in the future of the School of Medicine and would not leave except for the unique opportunity offered by this new position." Accepting Dr. Lawson’s resignation, said Dr. Pearson, "You have played a tremendous role in establishing the Department of Pediatrics on a firm basis and have been of unique service to the whole School of Medicine. Your willingness to take on the interim deanship was a completely unselfish action which you handled so well with your fine administrative skill and understanding of people. Until February, Dr.. Lawson will continue as acting dean and chairman of pediatrics. Meanwhile, a medical faculty committee, headed by Dr. Edward W.D. Norton, Ophthalmology chairman, is studying possible candidates for the deanship. AS OTHERS SEE UM Morris McLemore, the Miami News "Miami" columnist, devoted his entire space October 27 to UM’s Homecoming and a discussion of the University’s past, present and plans for the future, based on an hour’s interview the previous day with Dr. Pearson. Columned McLemore — "The University of Miami is many things --its Homecoming is many things — Iron Arrow time, for instance — The top campus honorary doesn’t fool around with ordinary status symbols. — On the second floor of the Ashe building, Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson entertained a visitor with memories of the young university’s 36 years. He was interrupted by a telephone call from Connecticut. A mother was distressed about her daughter’s classroom situation. He might have been talking to a donor of millions; the caller seemed content.ff Summed up McLemore: "The spirit and the imagination that always characterized UM’s top leadership are given substance by the physical plant itself — between 1950 and 1960, for instance, $11,320,000 worth of concrete and steel went into buildings on the mushrooming campus — and this isn’t a state university served lavishly by a proud legislature. It is estimated the UM contributes 50 million dollars (annually) to the Greater Miami community — Many of the teachers are concerned in one way or another with research or investigations by local business or government agencies. The UM, more than ever, is part of the Miami community." SPEAKING OF FACULTY Wilson Hicks, director of university publications and supervisor of student publications, was a member of the six man national committee appointed by the National Council of College Publications Advisers to select the council’s "distinguished advisors" for 1961. Mr. Hicks attended the council’s annual convention held in connection with the Associated Collegiate Press at the Fontainebleau last week...
