TO CLARIFY FACULTY STUDY - In the interest of dispelling expressed misunderstanding about current studies of a plan for faculty participation in the government of UM’s academic program, here are basic details of the project. Last Dec. 7, Dr. Robert Johns, executive vice president, wrote Dr. Herman Meyer, faculty council chairman, asking the council to undertake the study. Said Dr. Johns’ letter: "At the suggestion of Dr. Pearson, and after review with yourself and Dr. Tharp, I am recommending that the Faculty Council undertake a study to lead to a recommendation for proper form of democratic faculty participation in the academic program of the University. Would it be possible to have your recommendations in final form by January 1, 1962?” Later it was agreed to invite the UM chapter of AAUP to join with the Council in preparing recommendations. The Council is authorized only to make recommendations to Dr. Johns. Before any recommendations can be adopted they must be submitted to at least two votes by the entire faculty convened as a group. The study committees have been provided with samples of faculty government plans in other universities. The current items being circulated to faculty members have no official sanction from the Administrative Council or the Faculty Council, but are products of individual members of the AAUP study committee. In this connection another misunderstanding appears to have developed over relations between UM and the national AAUP. The status of these relations is correctly told in a telegram May 3 to Dr. Pearson from William P. Fidler, AAUP general secretary, which gives the text of a statement approved at the association’s recent Boston convention, as follows: ’’The Association is encouraged by the steps that have been taken to extend faculty participation in university government at the University of Miami and by the active discussions now going forward of plans for its further extension. In view of these promising developments, the Association refrains from further action at this stage and instructs Committee T to report to the next Annual Meeting on the progress achieved at the University of Miami during the interval. The Association takes note of the serious conditions of conflict that have been created in the School of Medicine, especially in the Department of Surgery, and expresses the hope that the progress being made throughout the University will be reflected at an early stage in the restoration of effective means of faculty participation within the School of Medicine.” NK HEADS DUPLICATING - UM’s own N.K. (Norman Koski, not Nikita Kruschev) last week was promoted from Printing Superintendent to Manager of the Duplicating Department. A native Pennsylvanian, Koski began working for Duplicating while a student, went to work full time after obtaining his BA as an art major in 1955. The following year he was called to active duty as an Air Force lieutenant for three years, then returned to Duplicating as an artist, was upped to printing super July 1, 1959. As a student he won awards for painting and etching. Married Nov* 19* 1955 t6 the former Nancy Ashley of Gldversville* N*Y, he is the father of three children.
