SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 11, No. 4 November 2, 1970 CAMPUS UNITED FUND The 1970 United Fund drive on campus DRIVE AT $23,660 had reached $23,660.49 by October 26 when Veritas went to press, according to Robert I. Fuerst, Director of Academic Services and associate campaign chairman. The figure represents 29.5 per cent of the UM’s goal of $80,000. Added Fuerst, “so far, the champs are the cleanup crew in the Ashe Building. There are 19 on the team — and 18 gave their Fair Share.” The contributions so far by department: President’s Office, $1,976.92; Academic Affairs, $13,102.17; Financial Affairs, $3,432.52; Development Affairs, $2,056; Medical Affairs, $1,556.88, and Student Affairs, $1,536. MAILMAN CENTER SETS The UM Mailman Center for Child De-DEDICATION MARCH 21 velopment, first children’s center of its kind in Florida, will hold its dedication ceremony on Sunday, March 21, 1971. The dedication will be followed by a three-day International Symposium on the Ecology of Child and Human Development. The symposium will be concerned with normal and aberrant intellectual development in children, the effects of environmental and nutritional deprivation on the brain, its intellectual growth and development, and the selective action of biochemical defects on brain function, said Dr. Frederick Richardson, center director. The 55-member staff, formerly housed in the Professional Arts Building on 14th Street, recently moved into its impressive new home in the UM-Dade County Medical Center. UM PRESS LISTS Five books will be published this month by FALL BOOKS the University of Miami Press. They are: “Christian Doctrine for the Instruction and Information of the Indians,” by Pedro de Cordoba, translated and with an introduction by Sterling A. Stoudemire, Nov. 16; “General Characteristics of the Germanic Languages,” by Antoine Meillet, translated by William P. Dismukes, professor of modern languages, emeritus, UM, Miami Linguistics Series No. 6, Nov. 20; “The Sword and the Scepter: The Problem of Militarism in Germany, Vol. II: The European Powers and the Wilhelminian Empire, 1890-1914,” by Gerhard Ritter, translated by Heinz Norden, Nov. 20; “Oskar Kokoschka — Drawings, 1906-1965,” compiled by Ernest G. Rathenau, translated by Heinz Norden, Nov. 27; “Critics on Jane Austen,” edited by Judith O’Neill. Readings in Literary Criticism No. 5, Nov. 27. On Oct. 30 the UM Press published “Language—Its Structure and Evolution,” by Marcel Cohen, translated by Leonard Muller, UM professor of French, Miami Linguistics Series No. 7, and “Elicitation Experiments in English: Linguistic Studies in Use and Attitude,” by Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, Miami Linguistics Series No. 10; On Oct. 28: “Dermatophytes: Their Recognition and Identification,” by Gerbert Rebell and David Taplin, UM dermatology; Sept. 1: “Decisions of Robert S. McNamara” by James M. Roherty. Four UM men have been honored with Governor’s Conservation Awards: Dr. Taylor Alexander, botany; Dr. William Fogarty, civil engineering; Arthur Marshall, estuarine ecology, and Dr, Durbin Tabb, fishery biology. All are involved in environmental studies... Dr, William R. Butler, vice president for student affairs and professor of education, was presented a special alumni award “for his outstanding service to Alma Mater as an administrator, and for his dedication of energy and talents in the development and growth of the Alumni Association” during an Awards Banquet held on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio Oct. 10. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio U. in 1950 and his M.A. in 1951 and served as Dean of Students at Ohio prior to joining the UM in 1965... Dr. Taylor Alexander, botany, will present a talk on the “Key Deer,” as part of the Pigeon Key Lecture Series at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 in the Marathon High-School Cafetorium, Marathon, Fla____ Dr. Leon Goure, director of Soviet Studies in CAIS, and Dr. Gerald G. Govorchin, history, attended the meeting of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies in New Orleans Oct. 15-17. Dr. Govorchin presented a paper on the “Voikov Affair.”... Dr. William G. Heuson, chairman, finance, will speak on “Monetary Controls—Do They Really Work?” before Fla. Bankers Association at Sheraton Four Ambassadors Hotel, Wed., Nov. 4... Dr. Richard L. Carner, director, Reading Clinic, and professor of education, spoke on “Can Critical Reading Be Taught to All Pupils?” at the annual Florida Reading Council Conference...
