SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 12, No. 14 March 27, 1972 LORD AND LADY SNOW Lord Charles Percy Snow and Lady TO VISIT THE CENTER Snow (Pamela Hansford Johnson) will visit the University of Miami's Center for Theoretical Studies April 12-27, as the first Maurice Gusman Fellows of the Center. Dr. Behram Kursunoglu, director of the Center, said the noted novelist, social philosopher and theoretical physicist will consult with Center members and other faculty in addition to delivering two lectures. On April 16 Lord Snow will speak on “Taking Care of Excellence"; on April 23, on “The World Problem." Because of limited space facilities, both lectures will be invitational for students, faculty, Fellows of the Center, and friends of the University. Lord and Lady Snow, the latter also a noted author, will be guests of Mr. Gusman during their visit. SOCIETY OF UNIVERSITY Thirty-six new members of the FOUNDERS BANQUET APRIL 5 Society of University Founders will be recognized in formal ceremonies during the sixth annual banquet in honor of all members of the Society to be hosted by the University of Miami Board of Trustees and President Stanford, April 5. Mrs. Robert Z. (Nancy) Greene is again chairman of the invitational black tie affair which will start with a reception at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Fontainebleau, with dinner at 8. The society of University Founders was organized by the UM trustees in 1966 to honor 140 charter members who either personally or through their organizations had committed a minimum of $50,000 to the support of the University since its founding as an independent institution in 1925. The new members constitute the largest group to be installed since 1966 and will bring the membership to 255. Gifts or pledges to the University represented by the Society in 1966 totalled $37 million. Commitment of the membership now totals more than $51 million. 100 SIGN FOR HAWAIIAN More than 100 UM alumni, faculty, TRIP: ROOM FOR 25 MORE administrators, staff and their immediate families have signed up for an 8-day, 7-night vacation to Hawaii, starting May 12, and there is room for 25 more. Cost is $399 per person, double occupancy, plus 10% tax and services. For brochures, write UM alumni relations office, Ponce Building. Mrs. Renate S.Gimborys, treasurer-manager, UM Credit Union, has been elected president of the Coral Keys chapter of the Florida Credit Union League. The chapter represents 51 member credit unions in the Miami area... Walter Beckham, law, was elected vice president of the international Academy of Trial Lawyers at its convention in Hawaii recently. He automatically becomes president-elect the following year... Dr. Eric B. Kraus, chairman of the division of atmospheric science, RSMAS, has been selected to receive a personal award of 750,-000 Belgian francs ($17,100) from the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in support of his project, Joint Air-Sea Interaction Project (JASIN). The award reflects an appreciation of the work carried out at the University of Miami and is to be used for cooperative projects with scientists from other NATO countries... Julio C. Mena. D.D.S., Institute of Oral Biology, recently received a Lincoln-Marti Award for 1971-72 from the Cuban Refugee Program, HEW, for his community service... Prof. John Rouse, English, was invited to give lectures and take part in seminars and panel discussions the week of Feb. 13 at California State University at Long Beach. The general subject was the inter-relationship between literature and painting... Eugene Williams, visiting instructor and associate director, Head Start, supplementary training program, attended the American Association of Higher Education Conference in Chicago March 5-8. He showed a film of effective teaching in the desegregated school...
