SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Volume 12, No. 3 October 18, 1971 PH.D. IN HISTORY The UM has inaugurated a new graduate INAUGURATED HERE program leading to the Doctor of Philos- ophy degree in history in selected fields in the area of Latin America, effective this semester. Major dissertation fields are: the Caribbean and Central America; Social and Intellectual History; Inter-American Relations, particularly in Cuba and the Andean countries; and South American republics. Supporting fields of study in United States History are: Diplomatic, Social-Intellectual, New South-Urban Black, and Twentieth Century Political; in European history: Diplomatic and Political since 1789, Modern Britain, Modern Russia, Intellectual, Ancient (Greek and Roman), and Modern Near East. The history of East Asia may also be chosen as a supporting field. While the student must demonstrate general competency in the field of Latin America, he must also show specific ability in five fields. Of these only two may be in the dissertation area. The other three may be chosen from the supporting fields, although one of the three may be taken in a department other than history. Dr. Raymond G. O'Connor, chairman of the UM history department, noted that in addition to meeting the requirements listed in the UM Graduate School Bulletin, Ph.D. candidates must also establish competency in Spanish or Portugese and one other language. DRAMA DEPARTMENT Seven plays will be presented this season SCHEDULES SEVEN by the UM drama department — six at the Ring Theatre and one at the Coconut Grove Playhouse. George Farquhar's “The Beaux Stratagem“ opens Wednesday October 13 and will run Wednesday through Saturday nights through October 30. This will be followed by Peter Nichol's “A Day in the Life of Joe Egg,“ starting November 24, running Wednesdays through Saturdays and closing December 4. On December 15 Sandy Wilson's 1954 musical, “The Boy Friend,“ will open at Coconut Grove Playhouse, run through December 18, with matinees Wed. and Sat. “Ondine,“ by Jean Giraudoux, will be the first Spring presentation, March 1-4 and 8-11. “Fiddler on the Roof“ will conclude the season April 26-29 and May 3-6 and May 10-13. In addition, candidates for the Master of Fine Arts degree will produce two full length plays, “Purlie Victorious“ and “Butterflies are Free,“ to run in January and May, respectively, in the Ring. Professional actors will once again join the casts of some of the major productions. The University's Children's Theater will do three productions during the year and tour Dade schools. The Ring box office will be open Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 1 p.m. until curtain on performance nights. For reservations, call 284-3355. Dr. F. G. Walton Smith, dean, RSMAS, addressed The Society of the Sigma Xi's 72nd annual meeting in Daytona Beach, Saturday, October 9. His topic was “What The Oceans Mean to Man.“... Luciano Magnanini, music, and principal bassonist with Greater Miami Philharmonic Orchestra, has been selected by conductor Alain Lombard and manager Dale Heapps to participate in the Federation of People-to-People's newly formed World Symphony Orchestra. One hundred and fifty orchestras throughout the world have been asked to select one musician to join the orchestra for a one-week tour. Conductor Arthur Fiedler will present the orchestra Oct. 22 in Philharmonic Hall in New York, on Oct. 23 at Walt Disney World, near Orlando, and later at Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.... James N. Sussex, chairman, psychiatry, was named as a delegate to the newly organized Section Council on Psychiatry of the American Medical Association... Professor Harry V. Senn and Bobby Wilson, Radar Meteorology Laboratory, recently returned from a week of Project Fury seeding operations in Hurricane Ginger... Two UM biology professors, Taylor R. Alexander and Oscar T. Owre, were among the participants, by invitation, to the Governor's Conference on Water Management in South Florida at Miami Beach September 22-24... Dr. Aaron Lipman. sociology, reviewed “Familia y Cultura en Colombia," by Virginia Pineda de Gutierrez, in the current issue of The Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs...
