SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 12, No. 5 November 15, 1971 UM RECEIVES GIFT FROM TRUSTEE The University of Miami FOR FIFTH LAW SCHOOL BUILDING has received a gift from Baron de Hirsch Meyer, UM trustee, to be used for construction of a fifth building in the School of Law complex. Announcement of the gift was made at the annual Law School Breakfast by Dr. Frederick D. Lewis, dean of the School. The new four-story structure will contain classrooms, faculty offices, seminar rooms and a student activities area. It will be the fifth law school building made possible by the generosity of Mr. Meyer. The four existing buildings, known as the Baron de Hirsch Meyer Buildings of the School of Law, were completed in 1956. They consist of a four-story faculty and administrative office building, a library whose third floor was added in 1964; a two-story classroom building and a one-story student lounge. The law library, one of the largest in the South, contains 150,000 volumes. Architect for the new building will be Robert Athos Koger of Miami; structural engineers, Jorge Pena y Lillo and Mario Pena y Lillo of Miami. Koger and Mario Pena y Lillo are UM alumni. Mechanical engineer will be-Louis H. Stoll & Associates of Miami. WEATHERMEN ATTEND Weathermen from 13 mainland states, METEOROLOGY CLASSES the District of Columbia, and Hawaii are attending the 36th special class in radar meteorology now in progress at the University of Miami. The internationally known Radar Meteorological Laboratory has been the focal point since 1959 for the unique one-month courses in laboratory and classroom. Instructors are Prof. Homer W. Hiser and Associate Professor Harry V. Senn, director and deputy director of the Rosen-stiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science facility. NEW DIVISION TO The UM School of Medicine has established STUDY DRUG ABUSE a Division of Addiction Sciences to develop methods of studying drug abuse which will serve as guides in controlling the problem. Co-directors are Dr. Carl Chambers, a Ph.D. in medical sociology who joined the medical faculty Oct. 1, and Dr. Thomas Carroll, Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Each man holds the academic rank of associate professor in addiction sciences and the division is under the Department of Psychiatry, headed by Dr. James N. Sussex. ADDRESS CHANGED? The Payroll Office requests all university NOTIFY PAYROLL employees to make sure the address which appears on your payroll check is the address you wish to have the year-end W-2 income tax form mailed to in January. UM director of insurance, was named a National Director of the University Insurance Managers Association for a three-year term at the group's annual conference at the University of Michigan... Dr. William F. Lee, dean, music, has been selected for his fourth award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for the unique prestige of his published standard works for orchestra, band and chamber music and on the number of performances given his compositions... Dr. T. Nejat Veziroglu. chairman, mechanical engineering, was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, England, for his contributions to mechanical engineering... Dr. R. C. Benitez, associate dean, law, has been honored by the Brazilian government for contributions to Brazil's aviation. He received the Alberto Santos Dumont Medal at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, D.C.... Dr. John R. Beery, dean, education, reports that the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education recently gave full accreditation for a 10-year period to the various teacher education programs at UM at bachelor's, master's, specialist's and doctoral levels... E. M, Papper, M.D., vicepresi-fent for medical affairs and dean, school of medicine, was designated Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Madrid during a visit to Spain. He was also nominated for Honorary Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain...
