SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume llf No. 8 January 4, 1971 SABBATICAL LEAVE Eleven faculty members have been granted FOR 11 PROFESSORS Sabbatical Leaves in the fifth year of the program. The participants are: For the Academic Year 1971-72: Associate Professor William L. Ward, art; Prof. H. A. B. Wiseman, mechanical engineering. For the Fall Semester 1971-72: Prof. Robert M. Allen, psychology and pediatrics; Associate Prof. Enrico Bonatti, Marine and Atmospheric Sciences; Prof. Richard D. Kreske, geography; Associate Prof. Joseph E. Youngblood, music. For the Spring Semester 1971-72: Prof. Albert Raffanel, foreign languages (French), and Associate Prof. Charles G. Werner, philoso-phy. July 1. 1971 to December 31. 1971: Prof. W. Henry Leigh, biology. September 1. 1971 to February 29, 1972: Prof. John B. Miale, pathology. September 1. 1971 to August 31. 1972: Prof. Clarence P. Idyll, marine and atmospheric sciences. In June, 1967, the UM became the first major institution in Florida to grant sabbatical leaves. PRESCRIPTION SAVINGS Beginning today, Jan. 4, all employes FOR UM PERSONNEL of the UM and their dependents may purchase, at a significantly-reduced price, prescribed and certain over-the-counter medicines from the pharmacy at the main campus Health Center Hospital. Employes wishing to take advantage of this fringe benefit may bring their non-emergency prescriptions to Health Center pharmacy Mondays through Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Faculty and employes of the medical school have the same privilege as main campus personnel. Prescriptions on the same basis will be filled at the UM Hospital and Clinic — NCCH pharmacy. CENTER COUNCIL In order to establish a stronger liaison between ESTABLISHED the Center for Theoretical Studies and other University divisions, a Center Council was recently formed. Members include: Edward L. Chambers, chairman, graduate program in cellular and molecular biology, chairman; Leonard J. Emmerglick, director, Center for Study of Public Law, School of Law; Frederick Fennell, chairman, applied music; Sylvester Goran, English dept.; Leonard J. Greenfield, chairman, biology; David Hertzig, chairman, mathematics; Joseph G. Hirschberg, chairman, physics; Marshall Jones, chairman, psychology; Eric B. Kraus, chairman, atmospheric science, RSMAS: Murray I. Mantell, chairman, civil engineering; Joseph Moder, chairman, industrial engineering and systems analysis; Raymond G. O'Connor, chairman, history; Bennett Sail man, chairman, microbiology; Gerrit Schipper, chairman, philosophy, and Clarence G. Stuckwisch, chairman, chemistry. Dr. Joseph G. Hirschberg, director, Optical Physics Laboratory, and chairman, physics, was elected president of new Florida Group of Optical Society of America; Dr.Howard R. Gordon, physics, and physical oceanography,RSMAS, is secretary-treasurer... Mrs. Joyce Knox from Buffalo, N.Y., has been named associate director of the Whitten Memorial Student Union. She completed her undergraduate work in sociology at Bethune-Cookman College, and continued her study of sociology at the graduate level at Boston University. She has also completed a year of study at the University of Buffalo in law. She replaces Chester Byrd, who resigned to rejoin the Broward County school system as assistant principal of South Broward High School... Dr. Jose Gonzalez, director, Division of Oral Hygiene, Commonwealth of Peurto Rico, was recently appointed Research Associate with UM's Institute of Oral Biology.. Phil Brodatz, director, UM Photo Center, had six photographs on exhibit at the Miami Art Center's Matrix show, and four photos featuring his portrayal of a flight of sea gulls in the centerfold section of the St. Petersburg Times' Floridian Magazine Dec. 13... An internationally known educator and research scientist, Professor Werner R. Loewenstein. has been named professor and chairman of the dept, of physiology of the UM School of Medicine. His appointment will be effective on or about July 1. He will come to Miami from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he is professor of physiology. He obtained both his bachelor of science degree in physics and his Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Chile...
