E R I T A S ti* vfekiyl APRIL 2, 1962 Office of Public Information Vol. ï**™ No ASSISTANT ADMISSIONS DIRECTORS NAMED New development in UM’s broadened admissions program FOR NEW YORK AND CHICAGO AREAS is the appointment of two regional assistant admis- sions directors. Named for this post in the New York area is Ronald A. Gerard, of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Graduated from UM in January with the BBA degree, with a major in management, Mr. Gerard previously served in the U.S. Air Force as an administrative assistant to the commanding general of the 17th Air Force. Appointed for the Chicago-Midwest region is Miss Katherine Kirby, a New Yorker, too, who holds her B.A. from Wellesley, where she majored in history and art, and M.A. from Columbia Teachers' College with major in student personnel and guidance. Miss Kirk has been assistant director of admissions for Ripon College, Wisconsin. The new regional assistant directors will be responsible to and work closely with UM’s office of admissions and records. Commented Dean Darrell J. Inabnit - ”We think it will be very advantageous to have representatives located in these two regions. This is part of UM’s program to obtain better quality and wider distribution of students.” STEERING GROUP NAMED TO HEAD STUDY A steering committee consisting of Dr. OF ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS, CONTROL PROCEDURES Johns, Mr. Cohen and a member of the Haskins and Sells Management Advisory Services Dept, will direct a program for improving the administrative and related systems and control procedures of the University. Under their direction will be a working committee, consisting of Paul Apt, Floyd (Dixie) Howell, Jr., Donald C. Bulat, Oscar Peacon and John Nixon of Haskins and Sells. Purpose of the study is to look at various procedures and functions to improve methods of reporting and of developing operating data leading toward better utilization of computer services available. Says the memo announcing the program, signed by Dr. Johns and Mr. Cohen: ”We believe the program has a potential for making a major contribution in improving administrative procedures and request your support.” AS OTHERS SEE UM Staff Writer Timothy Smith of the Miami Beach Reporter hailed the Trustees-Citizens Board dinner as ”the most brilliant of an already outstanding year of great and dazzling events. More than 900 had the good judgment to be included. All reflected great respect -- given generously to Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson. To most of us he has become a symbol of the character and integrity that we, as citizens, associate with a great and growing school of learning — growth that is reflected not only in numbers of increasing students but toward greater power of learning and the kind of education that builds better citizens for our community and for the strength of the future of our way of life in the USA.” LAW SCHOOL AREA BEING LANDSCAPED In case you are curious as to what goes on in the area AS PART OF BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM extending from the Law School to Miller Road opposite the Ring Theatre, Physical Plant Director John J. O'Day explains that it is being landscaped, under the general directive from Dr. Johns for beautification of the campus. The specific aim is to improve appearance of the grounds around the Library and Law School. Green grass will replace black-top pavement. SPEAKING OF PEOPLE Four faculty members were tapped last week by Omicroh Delta Kappa, national leadership and honorary for men. Tappees were: Karl Pond, asso. prof., modern languages; Eugene Massin, asst, prof., art; Dr. Herman Meyer, prof., math and engineering; Robert Stanton, special events director, radio-TV-film... Mary N. Edmonds, home ec., will speak on "Careers in Fashion” at Coral Gables High... Seymour M. Shoelson, senior med student, working under guidance of Dr. Murray M. Streitfeld, microbiology, has won the Meade-Johnson SMA award for original research in the Southeast...... Robert P. Ochs, bus. ed., will be recorder for the American Business Writing Assn, southeastern meeting...Prof. Cecil P. Marion, Jr., chmn, engineering graphics, will represent UM at a conference of Engineering Design and Graphics Education to be held at M I T next summer in cooperation with the National Science Foundation... An article by Dr. J. P. Lesperance, prof., management,and director of the Motion and Time Study Lab, has been published in the Time and Motion Study Journal, of London, official organ of the Institute of Incorporated Work Study Technologists. Title is ’’The Purpose and Significance of Executive Training Programs”... Wilson Hicks, University Publications director, addressed the South Florida Industrial Editors Assn. His topic: "Industrial Publications”.......... Samuel Messer, asso. prof., health and physical ed., new president of the Florida Driver and Traffic Safety Education Assn., will attend a conference of the Professional Driver Education Assn, in Tampa...New faculty wearers of Iron Arrow’s Seminole jacket are Dr. Ralph A. Harris, prof, of organ and theory and UM carilloneur, and Dr. Jess Spirer, director of Guidance Clinic and prof, of psychology and sociology... Prof. Homer Hiser, head of the Meteorological Research Lab, lectured at Florida Southern College last week.. Dr. Robert Ward, Commander, and Donald C. Bulat, Lieut. Commander, U S N R, will represent UM at the ROTC Cadet Orientation program at the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Fort Benning, Georgia, April 12 - 14.
