SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Summer Issue July 27, 1970 DR. KARL M. RUPPENTHAL FIRST President Stanford has an-VISITING RYDER PROFESSOR nounced the appointment of Dr. Karl M. Ruppenthal as the first Visiting Professor of Transportation and Logistics. Professor Ruppenthal, who arrives next month, has been Director of the Transportation Management Program at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business for the past 11 years. He established the Business Logistics Forum and the International Air Transportation Symposium. Ryder Systems, Inc., Miami’s nationwide truck leasing and distribution services firm, established the James A. Ryder Chair of Transportation and Logistics at the UM to provide “opportunity for increased professionalism within the industry.’’ The chair is named in honor of the company's president and founder, who is a trustee of the UM. The Ryder System gift is $335,000 over a five-year period. Dr. Ruppenthal holds A.B. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Kansas, M.B.A. degree from University of California; Ph.D. from Stanford, and Doctor of Jurisprudence from University of Kansas. SOCIETY OF SIGMA XI Professor Arnold Spicer of England, the LECTURE THURSDAY discoverer of ways to synthesize protein from materials which are largely carbohydrates, will be the speaker for the Society of the Sigma Xi meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, in Room 145, Science Building. The Society extends an invitation to members of the University community and the public to attend. Professor Spicer’s topic will be “Unconventional and New Food Sources.” He is director of research at the Lord Rank Research Center, High Wycombe, Bucks, England. LABORATORY FOR WATER A Laboratory for Water Research RESEARCH ESTABLISHED has been established in the Department of Chemistry, according to Dr. Clarence G. Stuckwish, department chairman. Dr. Walter Drost-Hansen, former acting chairman of the Division of Chemical Oceanography at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, has been appointed director of the new Laboratory. PALMER EYE INSTITUTE The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of GETS $100,000 GIFT the School of Medicine has received a $100,000 gift to serve as nucleus of a fund for major expansion of facilities and services. Dr. Edward W. D. Norton, Institute director and professor and chairman of the School's Department of Ophthalmology, identified the donor as Mrs. Willaford Leach of Palm Beach, who gave her personal check in the name of the Southern Dames of America. The Institute also received a $500 SDA check. Dr. James C. Vadakin. economics, is one of three persons appointed by President Nixon to an Emergency Board to investigate and report on the current railroad labor controversy this month and next... Emanuel M. Papper. M.D.. vice president for medical affairs, and dean, School of Medicine, testified June 10 before a Congressional hearing in Washington, D.C. in support of anesthesiology and rescus-citation as a measure to improve the public health of the nation. He addressed the 2nd Annual Cuban Medical Association convention July 1 on “The Commitment of the UM to Latin American Medical Culture’’.. Dr. Vergil A. Shipley became chairman of the UM's department of politics and public affairs (formerly the government department) June 1. He succeeds Dr. Thomas J. Wood who asked to return to fulltime teaching and research... Dr. F. G, Walton Smith, dean, RSMAS, will speak on “The Ocean Space Center” for the Guild of the Museum of Science Sept. 22. Dr. Smith was interviewed for an hour on the Larry King radio show over WIOD on July 18. He also appeared on a half-hour documentary, “Insight on Oceanography,” on Ch. 4, WTVJ-TV July 21... G.W.Smith. registrar, was elected President of the Fla. Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers for the 1970-71 year at the recent annual meeting of the group at the Statler-Hilton in Fort Lauderdale... Donald G. Smading. associate director of Student Financial Planning, has been appointed chairman, education and development committee, Fla. Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators for 1970-71...
