SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 12, No. 15 April 10, 1972 UM WINS REGIONAL The University of Miami has won the re- MOOT COURT TITLE gional round of the Phillip C. Jessup In- ternational Moot Court Competition qualifying for the semifinals for the world title in Washington, D.C., April 28, against six other teams. In winning the regional round in Birmingham, Alabama, March 24-25, the UM School of Law defeated Tulane, Cumberland, Georgia and Vanderbilt. Other teams competing were Florida and Emory. Over 70 teams competed in various regional rounds throughout the country. Robert F. Urich, UM senior, of Mission, Kansas, was named best oralist in the regional round. The other oralist was Paul Needham, a junior of Milton, Mass. Other team members are John Wopat, a junior, of Fair Haven, N.J., and Alan Whitaker, Jr., senior, of Fort Lauderdale. The teams argued before a mock International Arbitral Tribunal a case involving “Westphalia," an underdeveloped country which had been discriminated against in the international trade area by a superpower, “Titania." The UM team argued both sides of the hypothetical case in the competition. Judges included law school professors, political scientists, attorneys and federal and state judges. Faculty adviser is Associate Dean R. C. Benitez. UM won the world title in 1970. MUSICAL BY UM GRADUATES “N.O.W.!” an original musical PLAYS MDJC APRIL 12-16 comedy with words, music and book by University of Miami music graduates Larry Toppall and Don Muller with Michael Goldsmith will play at the new theater at Miami-Dade Junior College south campus April 12-16. Curtain is 8 p.m. nightly, with an 11 a.m. matinee on Friday, April 14. Theme of the musical is women’s lib fighting big business. The cast numbers 50. The show is directed by Ed Anderson, with choreography by Sherry Penn. The 30-member orchestra will be conducted by UM music graduate Gus Perry. Tickets are $1. For reservations, call 274-1120. UMWC TO HONOR The distaff side of the University family will LADY SNOW have the opportunity to meet Lady Snow when the UM Women’s Club honors her at a luncheon Tuesday, April 18, at 12:30 p.m. in the Faculty Club. The noted author, who writes under the name Pamela Hansford Johnson, will be visiting the University April 12-27 with her husband, Lord Charles Percy Snow, as the first Maurice Gusman Fellows of the Center for Theoretical Studies. Soloist for the Luncheon will be Miss Ruth Raffo of the Miami Opera Guild. For luncheon reservations, send check for $3.75 payable to Mrs. Murray Mantell, 8505 Miller Drive, Miami 33155. Reading Research Laboratory, has been appointed to the editorial board of Spelling Progress Bulletin, a quarterly dealing with research on regularized spelling of words for beginners in reading... Dr. Henry Truby. professor of anthropology, linguistics, and pediatrics, presented an invited paper entitled “The Relevance for Linguistics of Cryprinting, Voiceprinting, and the Soundprinting of Alien Species" at the XVII Annual Conference on Linguistics, of The International Linguistic Association, March 11, at the Carnegie International Center, New York City... UM music faculty who were soloists March 26-27 at Miami Beach Auditorium and Dade County Auditorium with the Miami Philharmonic in Haydn’s SinfoniaCon-certante were Julien Balogh. oboe; Luciano Magnanini. bassoon, and Ingus Naruns. cello... John Baratte. director, Lowe Art Museum, gave a slide-lecture on Greek Art to the Vizcaya guides at Vizcaya March 21... Victor Stern, viola, and Juan Mercadal. guitar, played works by Paganini, Gragnani, Villa-Lobos, De Falla and Ibert at the Norton Gallery, Palm Beach, March 28... Richard T. His topic: “Aspects of Conversion from One Computer Vendor to Another.’’...
