SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 10, No. 3 October 20, 1969 MOON SAMPLES University of Miami scientists are currently STUDIED HERE studying 51.8 grams of lunar material brought back to earth by the Apollo 11 crew in July. Dr. Sidney W. Fox, director of the Institute of Molecular Evolution and bioscience consultant to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration since 1960, is working with co-investigators Dr. Kaoru Harada and Dr. George Mueller. Dr. Fox told a special press conference Oct. 6 that in simple layman's terms the object of their experiments is to determine if there is evidence of molecular evolution on the moon. The UM will receive chips of moon rock at a later date, he said. UM SPONSORS TWO The University of Miami sponsored two COMMUNITY MEETINGS major meetings of community interest recently. Key problems relating to zoning which face Metropolitan Dade County were discussed at the Symposium on Zoning September 30 and October 7, drawing 285 persons. The Symposium, featuring recommendations relative to the new Metropolitan Dade County proposed zoning regulations, was presented by the UM Center for Urban Studies and the Division of Continuing Education. The UM and Everglades National Park co-sponsored a conference October 9-10 which brought together 100 scientists concerned with environmental problems, including water quality, as these affect Florida's coastal waters and interior of South Florida. Taking part in the former conference from UM were Dr. Carl E. B. McKenry, Jr., director, Center for Urban Studies; Prof. Robert G. Anderson, chairman, architecture and architectural engineering; and Dr. Murray I. Mantell, chairman, civil engineering; in the latter meeting, Dr. Eugene H. Man, dean, research coordination, Dr. McKenry, and Dr. Ronald H. Hofstet-ter, biology, chairman of the conference. MRS. P. J. CESARANQ Mrs. Patrick J. Cesarano is newly-elected ELECTED BY GUILD president of the steering committee of the UM Women's Guild, succeeding Mrs. E. B. Elliott, Jr. New members of the committee, elected for three-year terms, are Mrs. Lon Worth Crow, Jr., Mrs. Emil J. Gould, Mrs. M. Athalie Range, Mrs. Jane Sharpe Ryder and Miss Molly Turner. Continuing on the committee are Mrs. Walter H. Beckham, Jr., Mrs. Elton M. Cary, Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. John C. Harrison, Mrs. S. L. Higginbottom, Mrs. Karl J. Leib, Jr., Mrs. Joseph M. Lynch and Mrs. Harold R. Wright. Mrs. Gould is chairman of special events committee and Mrs. Wright chairman for special projects. Organized seven years ago, the Guild is comprised of leading women in the Greater Miami community. Their aim is to help the community understand the goals and objectives of the university and its many contributions to this area. UM President Henry King Stanford addressed members of the Guild at their first fall luncheon October 15. Dr. F, Thomas Sheeder, director, Student Financial and Career Planning, has been named to the Organization Committee of the Southern College Placement Association, Inc. He is past chairman of the SC PA Professional Development Committee... Dr. Marshall R. Jones, chairman, psychology, and member of the American Psychological Association's Council of Representatives, attended the Public Policy Conference for Psychologists at Williamsburg, Va. October 5-10... An article, “Voltaire and Humphry Clinker," by Dr. Evelyn Helmick, English, was published in Vol. 68, 1969 issue of Studies on Voltaire and the 18th Century, Voltaire Institute, Geneva, Switzerland... Dr. Grover A. J. Noetzel, economics, spoke on “Economic Foundations of Real Estate" to the Miami Board of Realtors Oct. 15, on “Economic Opportunities in the Seventies," to the National Association of Meat Purveyors Oct. 13, and will speak on “The Nature of International Change" for the Southern Medical Association in Atlanta November 11... An article, “Marketing in Israel," by John M. Dyer and Robert J. Thomas, marketing, appeared in the September Business and Economic Dimensions, journal of the graduate faculty, College of Business Administration, University of Florida... Julien Balogh, music, will be oboe soloist with the Greater Miami Philharmonic, Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, performing Cimarossa Oboe Concerto... Dr. Harold L.
