SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff July 18, 1966 Summer Issue UNIVERSITY ADOPTS For the third time in its 40-year history, the A NEW GREAT SEAL University has adopted a Great Seal. The first seal, fashioned soon after the founding of UM, included a scenic cloud and a drawing of an ornate, classical Mediterranean temple of learning. When it was pointed out later that a cloud bears a sinister connotation, and the ornate structure was rather outdated, the heraldic experts and artists went back to their books and drawing boards. The second seal came out from under its cloud in 1949 and faced the world with a likeness of the modern Merrick Building on the Main Campus and a wealth of symbolism. This seal has served UM well for a number of years, but there was no doubt in anyone's mind that it presented a rather cluttered and confusing image of a university that was refining its purposes and streamlining its functions as a center of learning. The new Great Seal, which has been registered as a Trademark of the University, achieves simplicity and unity of design that represents more faithfully the role of the Southeast's largest independent university on the move. On the shield, which denotes a family of honor, there is a band of green (representing hope and renewal) that slants downward from the upper left to the right. On this band rests an open book bearing the Latin legend "Investigate Conservatio et Disseminatio Scientiae" (Discovery, Preservation and Dissemination of Knowledge). Above this band, on a field of gold, is the torch of freedom, and below the band, on a field of silver, is the key to learning. At the crest, above the shield, is a palm tree (tree of knowledge) against a background of stylized rising sun (sun of wisdom). At the base, beneath the shield on a ribbon of silver, is the university's motto in Latin, "Magna Est Veritas" (Great Is Truth). All of the foregoing is on a circular field of blue, surrounded by a silver border bearing, above, the words "Great Seal University of Miami" and, below, "Coral Gables Florida 1925," the date of the charter. The new Great Seal was designed by heraldic authority Dr. Jack A. Reynolds, professor of English and author of definitive works on heraldry, including "Heraldry and You" and "Heraldry and the Librarian." Serving on the committee charged with preparing the 3w seal were the late Dr. Virgil A. Barker, Dr. C. Doren Tharp, Yilson Hicks and Miss Nedra McNamara. Norman Koski, Director of Printing Arts, prepared the final rendering of the Great Seal, approved by the Board of Trustees for use by the university. The new seal is on display in the Student Union, the Bookstore, the Otto G. Richter Library and the Ashe Building. Dr. William C. Knopf. Dean of Engineering, is one of a select group of educators chosen to attend a conference on Electromagnetic Fields in Electrical Devices at the University of Colorado July 17-Aug. 6.
