Story On Page 3 IFC Council Will Meet Wednesday, Take Formal Vote To Outlaw Hazing By HOWARD GREENWALD Hurrican- Copy Editor "Hell Week" and hazing of pledges at U-M virtually became a thing of the past this week as 16 of the 25 campus fraternities unanimously voted to outlaw all forms of it at the University. The action came at fraternity meetings late last week and early thia week as a direct result of a proposed IFC amendment which would, ln effect, prohibit mental and physical hazing and provide for a constructive initiation week. Formal vote will be taken at the next Interfraternity council meeting Wednesday. Should two-thirds of the fraternities cast a vote for the amendment, hazing activities in any group would constitute a violation of the IFC ruling. Six fraternities could not be contacted at press time, two had not yet come to a decision and one refuseed to reveal the policies of the group. All but one of the 16 groups pledged full support of a proposed IFC committee which would assign fraternities worthwhile community and University projects during 'Hell Week." The president of each fraternity was individually interviewed to determine the campus trend on the issue. Phi Sigma Delta set a pattern for other fraternities when its members voted in accord last week to do away with all physical hazing. In its place, according to Bob Sperling, publicity chairman, the group will perform "good deeds" at local hospitals, children's organizations and charities. Pi Kappa Phi's Tony D'Agostino, in offering the full support of hia fraternity, summarizeed what he thought to be the purpose of a fraternity. "We try to treat pledges as men," he said. "Our work will be completely ■constructive. 'Hell Week' simply is not college level. Silly road trips and other hazing activities teach a pledge nothing about fraternity. "We want our pledges to be gentlemen and brothers." Alpha Epsilon Pi could only pledge a continued ban on hazing. No form of it has existed in the fraternity since its installation on campus four years ago, according to Mike Mescon.
