Registration must be completed by Saturday. When the Gala Weekend To Be Sparked By Rally, Long Float Parade By MARVIN GREEN Hopes that the 1948 Homecoming would be the greatest festival ever witnessed by U-M students and alumni skyrocketed with the announcement this week that Tex Beneke and his Glenn Miller orchestra will provide the music for three weekend dances. Former stars of the “Chesterfield Supper Club” radio show, First Club Social Free To Students; Dancing 8 'Til 12 By IRA POWERS The Student Club will officially open at 9 Thursday night with a free ‘Howdy Dance’ for all students. This will be the first chance for freshmen, transfer students, and former students to get to know each other. Mark Marks’ band, which held the lead billing at the meeting of Miami jazz bands,' will play at the opening. Three members of the band, including Mark Marks, will give a bebop concert during intermission. The Marks organization is featured on the Lee Donahue show on WINZ, which also uses a Marks recording as its theme. Members of the band include men who have played with such groups as Vincent Lopez, Boyd Rayburn, and the Mardi Gras band. “The Woes of a Freshman,” a comedy skit, will be presented during intermission by Nancy Gramley and Paul Silverman. The pair plan to show how life at U-M can change a person in the four years between freshman registration and graduation. A welcoming committee of nine fellows and nine girls will see to it that there are no lonely students at the dance. Ruth Welsh, head of the committee, said she will see to it that wherever possible introductions will be performed by members of the committee to pair up strangers. Red Robbins, president of the Student Association, will act as emcee for the dance. deadline for registration permits was reached Friday, over 5,000 cards ,had been issued, according to Henry Troetschel, assistant registrar. He said that 4,000 applications had been sent to students seeking admittance as freshmen. These applicants wind up their freshmen placement tests today; they started yesterday. A number of students were pre-registered Thursday. These included those who will help with registration, student assistants, football players, Student Government officers, and Hurricane and Ibis staff members. Mr. Troetschel reported that an increasing number of people seeking information about the school have been applying for admission. (Continued on page five) Incoming Coeds To Be Greeted At Dorm Party An informal party to honor new women resident students of the University will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8 o’cloek at the San Sebastian dormitory on the North Campus. In charge of the entertainment will be Miriam Acenbrgck, president of the Resident Women’s association. Miss Acenbrack said the party is designed to introduce the new students to members of the Resident Women’s association and some of the members of the personnel residence staff. On hand to greet the girls will be the Dean of Women, Mary B. Merritt, Miss May A. Brunson, assistant counselor for women, and Miss Janet F. Lovett. Other staff members in attendance will be Mrs. Lillian F. Slack, residence counselor; Mrs. Ruth Kamin, assistant counselor on Main Campus; Miss Josephine Wilson, and Miss Eleanor Shields, both assistant counselors at San Sebastian. Beneke and his 34-piece aggregation will include such names as vocalist Ronnie Deauville and the Moonlight Serenaders; “Esquire” award trumpeteer, Pete Candoli; and drummer-man supreme, Jack Sperling. Arrangements for the personal appearance of Tex Beneke were completed by Homecoming chairman Henry Caballero and Dr. Thurston Adams, director of student activities. “We were very pleased to hear that Beneke and his crew had accepted our bid to appear over the Homecoming weekend,” Caballero said, "and you can be sure that his appearance will spark the plans we have for the three-day festival to even greater heights.” Two of the dances, an informal tea-dance and “Welcome Alumni” dance will be held in the Student Club on the afternoon and evening of Oct. 29. The final Homecoming dance, a semi-formal affair, will be staged at the Bayfront Park auditorium the following evening. Group tickets for all three dances will be on sale to students next week at $6.00 a couple. Single tickets for any of the three* dances will go to students at the following rates; tea dance—$1.50 a couple; “Welcome Alumni” dance—$4.50 a cou-(Continued on page five) Having trouble finding your way around the campus?
