Gables, Florida, September 17, 1965 MO 1-2511, Ext. 2942 Tate’s Hurricanes To Meet SMU In Orange Bowl Opener By JOE SUMMERS HURRICANE SRlrtl Hit* Tomorrow night is football D-Day for the University of Miami Hurricanes as they open their season in the Or- ange Bowl against Southern Methodist University. Not unlike that memorable day, June 6, 1944, massive preparations on many fronts have taken place. Head Coach Charlies Tate's gridders began practice on September 1, for what many preseason speculators have tabbed as a winning season. They have gone through grueling two-a-day sessions for two weeks, missing only one day be- Open House This Weekend Thirty Fraternities, Sororities Release Rush Week Schedules September will find the fraternity system at the University faced with new hope for growth and excellence. Those intrinsicly interested shall discover many rewarding experiences and many new friends as part of Rush Week activities. All 17 fraternities are bidding for incoming freshman and upperclassmen to round out their rosters for the coming year. The calendar of events for the first week of rush will be as follows: FRIDAY, September 17th—All fraternity men go to Grand Ballroom of Student Union for Rush Meeting. Time: 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. SUNDAY, September 19th—1FC Smoker. All Rushers Please Attend. Time: 1:00 p.m. • 4:00 pm. Place: Grand Ballroom. MONDAY, September 20th — Formal Rush begins. Greek Caravan: 4:00 p.m. Parties on Row: Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau. TUESDAY, September 21st — Hey, We’re Back Again ^=¿1 // We decided to print this cartoon of our mascot—The Ibis—because our mother said that we should be nice to people. This is probably the only time you will see him in such a joyous mood, because we don't want to be sickening about our good heartedness. The Ibis is happy for many reasons: because Miami is going to smash SMU tomorrow night, because we have lotsa' new happy innocent freshmen and because the university wasn't blown away during the Hurricane. Parties on Row: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Epsilon Pi, Tau Delta Phi. WEDNESDAY, September 22nd —Parties on Row: Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Tau Epsilon Phi. THURSDAY, September 23rd— Parties on Row: Phi Sigma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Sigma Nu. FRIDAY, September 24th—All-Greek Mixer. TWO BIG BANDS. Late snack served. Time: 7:30 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. Place: Fraternity Row. Representing 13 national sororities, the Panhellenic Council began its formal rush schedule yesterday as rush registration began. Today, rush registration will be held until 4 pm. in the breeze-way of Mahoney Hall and New Hall East. The council, under the leadership of President Margo Mangus, has scheduled rushing activities through September 23. The schedule: Saturday, September 18; 12:30 pm.; Rush meeting at the Learning Center. Saturday, September 18; 1:30-4:20 p.m.; Open house at Panhellenic House (school clothes.) Sunday, September 19, 1:00-3:25 p.m.; Open house at Panhellenic House. Tuesday, September 21; 9:30 am. - 5:00 p.m.; Pick up invitations in rush secretary’s office. Wednesday, September 22; 3:30 - 8:10 pm.; First Party at Panhellenic House. Thursday, September 23; 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 pm. Pick up invitations in rush secretary’s office. cause of another Hurricane. Betsy. The reason for optimism among people who predict a winner for UM can be summed up in one word: Depth. The ’Canes lost their first four games in 1964 be cause of injuries to key personel with no experienced men to take over. Many feel that will not be the case this year. In the offensive backfield, veterans Bob Biletnikoff, Russ Smith and Pete Banaszak return. Biletnikoff is better than average runner and a passer who broke all of George Mira's sophomore records. Smith and Banaszak, if they stay healthy, will give UM an inside and side running combination that will lease opponents hurting. If injuries occur, capable backup men are available in Joe How-ington and Bill Miller at quarterback: Fred Cassidy and Dennis Hackett at fullback; and Doug (Continued on Page Four) Concert Is First Of Six Presented By USG In 65 UM Provides New Campus) Info Service Undergraduate Student Government has provided a campus events weekly listing for those persons interested in what’s eventing on campus. Those persons who are interested can find out what the fates have in store by calling extension 2941. A recorded message will then repeat the listing. If it's a slow week the recorded message will recite poetry. Don’t forget to bring cushions or a blanket to the Serendipity Singers tonight. It will be held on the Student Union Patio and since it’s such a folksy event they decided to go all out ethnic and sit on the floor. ♦ The first of six concerts scheduled on the UM campus this fall will be inaugurated tonight as Undergraduate Student Government presents the Serendipity Singers, at 8 pm. on the Student Union patio. Serendipity translated from the original Greek is a word meaning “an unexpected discovery of a new and happy event.” The concert tonight should be just that as the nine singers led by Bryan Sennett and Brooks Hatch, have been a big name in entertainment since their hit recording of “Don’t Let the Rain Come Down.” The hit rose to number five in popularity within a matter of a few weeks, and ever since the Serendipity Singers have been in constant demand. This special edition of the Hurricane was brought to you through the generosity of the advertisers—various fraternities. Inter - Fraternity Council, Associated Women Students and Undergraduate Student Government, and the insane enthusiasm of my staff. Having appeared on ABC-TV "Hootenanny" shows, the Singers are now on a Ford Caravan of Music tour, visiting college campuses all over the nation. The Concert Series under the leadership of its chairman Si Johnson was made a reality when the student body overwhelmingly voted its approval of a USG Budget Referendum. The referendum increased the student activity fee one dollar per semester. It stipulated that the additional funds would be used for increased entertainment and cultural affairs. Along with Bryan Sennett and Brooks Hatch, the members of the group are Mike Brovsky, Bob Young, John Madden, John Ar-benz, and Tommy Tieman. A recent addition to the group is talented Lauree Berger who rounds out the group to a “perfect musical team.” Chairman Johnson reports there will be five more concerts this fall. The second of the season October 8, will feature the Town Criers. According to Johnson, students can expect “anything from 'ole mountain ballads to the ‘twelfth of Never,’ from a humer-ous collection of historical anecdotes to a rousing sing-along.” 18-year ole Leslie Gore will be featured in the December 10 concert, while The Lettermen will be the fourth group to appear. The Lettermen concert will be featured after Christmas holidays. Dave Brubeck will be presented in Febraury. Johnson notes that the last concert in the series is as yet undetermined.
