Dr. Stanford To Review Tenure Case In statements to the Miami Herald Wednesday, UM president Dr. Henry King Stanford defended the right of students to petition administrative officials on matters concerning faculty tenure. “Any serious expression of student interest in an academic matter such as tenure,” he stated, “will receive from me the serious attention it deserves.” Dr. Stanford’s remarks were prompted by the recent decision by the University not to grant tenure to Dr. Barry Hersker, an assistant professor in the Marketing Department, and the petition sponsored by UNITED asking that Dr. Hersker be retained. He stated that he had received a copy of the petition containing 800 to 900 signatures. Dr. Stanford also said that he is reviewing the question with other University officials and added that “The students are entitled to a definite reply from me, and I do intend to give them one, probably in the next few days.” Dr. Hersker has recently been appointed Miami advisor of the fashion industry by Mayor Robert King High, who railed Dr. Hersker “one of the best-known experts in the fashion marketing field.” He has just completed a study of women's garment manufacturing and will report to the City in three weeks. The UNITED petition cited Dr. Hersker’s “continuing academic achievements” and stated that his loss would be an “obvious error” on the part of the University. It was presented to Dr. Stanford on March 14. Five of the awards were given for his self-written and recorded “King of the Road” single. Miller, who will highlight the USG presentation of the Ford Caravan of Music tomorrow evening, has also been honored by the Music Operator’s Association of America with the Favorite Record and Favorite Entertainer Awards for 1965. He recently signed with one of the national television networks for a weekly television program next season. Sharing the spotlight with Miller tomorrow evening will be the Good Time Singers, who are currently appearing in their fourth consecutive season with the Andy Williams Show. Tickets for the special program are available in the ticket office of the UM Student Union for $1.50 apiece. “The regular funds provided for the USG Entertainment Series did not provide for tomorrow’s special concert,” explained USG Entertainment Chairman Si Johnson. “There are a limited number of tickets available for the concert, and for this reason we would encourage those who want to attend to purchase their tickets as soon as possible,” concluded Johnson.
