Gabi.k>, Fi.oriiia, April 30. 1063 MO 1-2511. Kxt. 2581 There was a band, marching troops, pretty girls, generous trustees ard even a birthday cake for the president. It was the dedication of the $3.2 million UM student union and it was also the 49th birthday of University President Henry King Stanford—both of them on April 22. Dedication ceremonies included the traditional super-market ribbon-cutting by three campus lovelies, speeches by representatives of the Undergraduate Student Government and the Student Union Board of Governors. Past President of USG James Blosser (1959-1960) discussed the beginnings of the union when plans H. R. Council Symposium Set Tomorrow UM president Henry King Stanford will be among the guest speakers at the second Florida "Symposium on Concern" May 1, in the LC Building. Presented by the UM Chapter of the Florida Council on Human Relations in conjunction with the Southern Student Human Relations project of the United States National Student Association, the symposium is to expose ideas and methods of student involvement in social, political, and economic affairs. The sponsors of the conference hope that discussion of these problems will lead to eventual solutions. Four workshops will concentrate on areas of university reform, peace, poverty and tutorial projects. These groups will also review student participation in existing government projects, such as VISTA. The Community Relations Service, and the Civil Rights Commission. Panelists and guest speakers will include Dr. H. Franklin Williams. Dean of University College; Clarence Jones, Miami Herald staff writer; Dr. Marshall C. Jones, U. of Florida; Haley Sofge, Miami Housing Authority; Thomas Weatherly, Dade County Economic Opportunity Program; Margaret Taylor, Palm Beach County Health Department; Dr. Thomas P. Hardeman, Community Services Foundation; John Bethea, UM; and Nathaniel S. Rolle. Assistant Principal. Miami Georfge Washington Carver High School. The symposium will be open to all students interested in political and economic problems of the community. The registration fee of $2.50, which includes afternoon and evening meals. ($.50 without meals) will be payable today or at the first meeting, tomorrow, at 9 a.m. in LC 170. began to take shape after students voted to tax themselves in order to finance the union and the present Otto G. Richter Library. Josh Vemaglia, chairman-designate of the union board and vice president-elect of USG, brought discussion to the present explaining, "For those who look just to the past or merely to the present are certain to miss the future. We must look upon this union as a foundation upon which can be constructed an even stronger and even more united and even more effectual student body.” A special plaque was presented by USG and the Miami Hurricane to Norman "Chink" Whitten, director of the student union, for his dedication and service to the planning, construction and management of the building. When President Henry King Stanford was introduced, the entire audience and those honored guests gathered on the platform rose and sang "Happy Birthday.” Slater Food Services presented Dr. Stanford with a birthday cake baked in the shape of the union, and a proclamation was read and presented to the president in behalf of the student body wishing him birthday salutations and | thanking him for “leading the university so far along the path 1 of growth and respect.” Army and Air Force ROTC units presented their colors to him while the UM "Band of the Hour" played. A short concert was presented by the “Singing Hurricanes.” The 164' x 75’ Olympic pool was used following the formal ceremonies by the Pete Desjardins Water Show, featuring acrobatic and clown diving routines. A gold bowling ball was rolled > down one of the 12 bowling alleys j by President Stanford to open the | lanes. An open house followed the ceremonies. Registration Registration for the First Summer Session 1965. will take place on Wednesday, | June 16. Currently enrolled Undergraduates who plan to attend must secure an Appointment Card. Registration Appoint-Cards will be issued on a first come-first served basis beginning on May 3. 1965 in the Office of the Registrar. If appointment cards are not picked up prior to June 10, undergraduates may find it necessary to register in Late Registration. Graduate students who plan to attend must go to the Graduate School Office to pick up their appointment cards. ¿tmmwmsm* «*.*> Greek Trophy For Grabs ♦ Guatici, Kappa Sig, Given 1965 IFC Plato Award Charles Guanci, the current chairman of the IFC Greek Week, last night received the Plato Award, originated last year as the highest individual honor which can be given to a fraternity man at the University of Miami. The Award was designed last spring by Advisor to Fraternities Kenneth Kerr, and the selection of the winner is made each year by the advisor to fraternities. Guanci, a 22-year-old senior from Miami is Kappa Sig and is majoring in Radio-Television-Film. Gaunci is currently completeing his term of office as president of Omega, the Greek honorary. Last year, he served as co-chairman of Greek week and this year as chairman of the week. Guanci has also been the recipient of a Certificate of Merit Award from IFC, and served this vear as the IFC representative to j USG CHARLES GUANCI G lick, Sehon Head MRHA Barry Click and Ed Sehon were elected Mens Residence Hall Association president and vice-president respectively by a two-to-one mandate Wednesday night. He has been a member at large of the IFC executive council. He recently received the Outstanding Man of the Year Award of the UM chapter of Kappa Sigma. As a member of Kappa Sig he has been pledge trainer, social chairman, vice president and president of the UM chapter. Songfest Set For Tomorrow Songfest-Swingtest, one of the UMs oldest traditions, is slated for tomorrow 7:30 p.m., Dade County Auditorium. Glick is a junior, now living in Jefferson House, Sehon is a freshman residing at La Gorce House. The other MRHA officers elected were secretary Harry Babcock, from Monroe House, and treasurer for his second term Roy Wetzer, from Washington House The new officers will be installed at the MRHA banquet, May 7. Barry Glick had this statement for the HURRICANE: "The Men’s Residence Halls Association will continue to work for a united campus, and pledges itself to co-operate with other student organizations. MRHA is looking forward to its most suc-cesful year ever.” Broadway hits, blues numbers, folk songs and religious themes are included in the program The University's Jazz Lab Orchestra will open the festival of song which will be hosted by WlOD’s Henry Barrow. As sponsors of the event. Phi Mu Alpha, professional music fraternity, will ■ ward trophies to the top fraternities, sororities, and mixed organizations. Following the contest, the Swingfest dance will climax the evening in the new Student Union where winners will be announced. Tickets may be purchased from any member of Phi Mu Alpha, at the Student Union, or at Dade County Auditorium. UM Blood Drivp Nets 219 Pints A total of 219 pints of blood were collected at the Greek Week Blood Drive at the Student Union last week. Bob McDonald this year’s chairman for the Blood Drive expressed his diappointment at the turn out by saying “Out of the 756 Greek men and the many independents that I had hoped would donate, we fell extremely short of our goal. This year’s total was of course improvement over last years of 204 pints, but I can’t help but feel that it was not enough of an improvement.” With the beginning of Olympic Day competition this afternoon. Friday, the over-all Greek Week trophy is still in hot contention. ---------—f IFC Elects 'Doe’Ridenour Richard "Doc" Ridenour, of Alpha Tau Omega, was elected president of the University of Miami's Interfraternity Council, on Tuesday afternoon during the annual Greek Week IFC elections. Ridenour, 21 a pre-med major, will head a list of six newly elected officers during the coming year. He has served during the past year as the treasurer in IFC, and has been active in IFC activities for the past two years at UM. Ridenour's vice-president, Richard Magid, of Zeta Beta Tau. was sworn in, along with the other newly elected officers at Thursday evening's IFC banquet. The new treasurer is Gene Anderson. of Sigma Chi fraternity, and Gary Leboss, a member of Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity was chosen secretary Walt Karns, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Pete Luhrs. Kappa Sigma, were elected Member-At-Large and U.S.G representative respectively. Pilot» by Lew Pi über. Tickets for the dinner, | being served between 5 and 6 45 p.m., are available from all SAE pledges and brothers for $1.25. Kappa Sigma fraternity, with Mike Whitman as its representative, began Greek Week by taking first place points in the Marathon Race on Monday Evening. Whitman set fire to the Greek Week torch, the symbol of the special fraternity-sorority week of festivities Whitman was followed by Walt Kurils of Pi Kappa Alpha and Tim Pratt of Alpha Tau Omega who finished in second and third places respectively in the almost two mile race. On Tuesday evening Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities jumped into the winners circle. SAE took first place in the Greek Week skit competition. Greek Week festivities come to a close with the IFC dance. It will take place on the patio of the new Student Union from 9 p m. to 12 p.m., tonight. Featured will be “The Platters” of Mercury Records. They will be backed by the Frank Williams Band from the Island Club. Another part of the program will include the presentation of aw'ards and Greek Week trophies. Jack Sims of SAE portrayed a Greek goddess attempting to make a decision on which prince of Greece to marry. Sigma Chi took second place in the skit competition with a news broadcast narrated by Paul Seago. and spoofing the recent scandal at the Air Force Academy and a meeting of the Klu Klux Klan. Alpha Tau Omega took third place in the competition. Sigma Chi and SAE again split the first and second place positions on Wednesday afternoon. when Sigma Chi took first place in the Greek God Contest, followed by SAE. Boh Stanley portrayed Oedipus in a Sigma Chi production of the story of OEDIPUS REX. Tom Coughlin of SAE presented a comic picture of Zeus in a take off of “Hello Greeks.” At Thursday evenings annual IFC Banquet, Charlie Guanci. of Kappa Sig, received the Plato Award, the highest individual honor which can be given to a fraternity man at the University, and a Certificate of Merit award. Other Certificates of Merit recipients were Jack Afflebach. Sigma Chi. out-going president of IFC. and Carl Blvskal, SAE, outgoing vice-president.
