A total of 1,448 students voted in the one day runoff election, 300 more than voted in the runoff election last spring Lubel defeated Dave Goldberg (G.V & <?o.) by a surprisingly comfortable margin of 874 to 485. Woodward defeated Nickie Valme (G.V. & Co.) by a margin of 768 to 560. The only close race was the Treasurer's seat in which Nunes defeated Independent Bill Lawrence by a 680-637 margin Lawrence had said Monday that he was going to appeal to the Election Commission because he claims he was not given equal time on the air in WVUM's Presidential debates broadcasted the same day. Lehr Concentrates ()n Campus Culminating an all-out three month effort. Coral Gables mayoral candidate Bruce Lehr is now concentrating his efforts on the University vote. "Throughout the months of campaigning in the Gables, I have saved the University as my trump card," Lehr said “With the estimated voter turnout, the UM students can put the next Gables mayor into office.” Lehr is a UM graduate of last May, and was Hurricane Editor last spring. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Delta Chi. Lehr’s on-campus slogan is, "A vote for Lehr is a vote for you and the U.” To help spur the student enthusiasm, Lehr has chartered a bus to run shuttle service during election day. It will run throughout the campus, stopping at major campus places such as the Union and the dorms. “I have worked so very hard over the past months, and now it will only take 15 minutes for the students to finish the job," Lehr added Lehr has gained much community support with his platform calling for an “active status quo." He explains that this means making the changes which are necessary to keep the Gables the way it is. So far written up in the Miami Herald, Miami News , Coral Gables Times/Guide, and other publications, Lehr feels that all the publicity will work in his favor. Lehr was born in Brooklyn, New York, and has lived in Coral Gables for five years He has just been accepted to the UM Law School, and hopes to stay in Coral Gables for good. "There is a great feeling of coni-raderie between almost all of the candidates, and that alone seems worth it all," Lehr said. “With the amount of money that UM students pour into the Gables in taxes and shopping money, students have been treated as aliens for long enough," L,ehr said “I am all for keeping the Gables the prestigious community that it has always been, but feel that as mayor, I would be able to do the best job of serving all the citizens, of all ages, whether they live on or off campus." \ 11 <a il I.iiIh-I Lawrence never made the formal appeal to the Election Commission and according to one election commissioner, he never planned to do so unless he lost the election Lawrence denied this. He said that he did appeal Tuesday night after the polls had closed but before the results were announced Now he is taking his case to the Supreme Court because he said the election was run in a “prejudiced” manner detrimental to the independent contenders. The Election Commission has no jurisdiction after the election is held and the Supreme Court must decide on the case if an appeal is made According to WVUM News Director Dana Palley, the candidates for the Treasurer’s seat were never offered time on the air Nunes did not show up for the debates because he had not been asked to do so. Ross had said that the plans to allow both treasurer candidates to speak were scrapped because Nutles did not show up. According to Palley, the candidales for Treasurer had never been asked to participate in the debate The WVUM Advisory Board de- termined Tuesday that the debates were broadcast illegally because WVUM is a non-commercial station and federal regulations stipulate that promotions of candidates for public office cannot broadcast over such a station Block said that the station "could get around that" by saying the debates were a discussion of important issues and not a campaign debat i- Security was called Monday night when G.V. & Co. campaign workers were seen refolding Hurricanes so a political advertisement they placed on the last page would be more visible to students Hurricane photographer Ed Griffin said he was threatened by G.V. One said he did not want his picture taken," Griffin said Lubel said the campaign dealt with issues more than ever because the campaign spending bill, the so-called "Lubel Bill," limited the cam- See page 6 TV History Series Produced By U M By KATHLEEN PAGLEY Hurrican* Staff Wrifar Various UM departments, including history and communications services, have joined forces to produce a 24-part historical series on world civilization for Telegroup Ltd. for use in The Universal College Program.
