1 Frisbee Master Dazzles UM Crowd- ^ Victor Ma la fronte GARY MATIRA Mvrr>c«n« SI«« W- 1« When he was growing up in Brooklyn World Friabee Champion Victor Maiatronte never imagined that he would one day travel all over the world and earn his living by throwing around a plastic disk Yesterday Maiatronte gave a demonstration of his (risbee prowess and judged a student competition in the held behind the Student Union I love what I am doing; he said How many people can travel around the world and meet people like Howard Cosell. Alex Karras and Tatum O'Neal because of a Frisbee’ Malafronte spent six months touring with the Harlem Globetrotters and recently toured Japan where he gave performances and promoted the Fnsbee tad to the Japanese people The Japanese response was overwhelming Before I left. I saw school children tossing frisbees around at recess, he said With the Globetrotters. Malafronte choreographed pre game shows that featured a western style shoot-out to the theme of Bonanza using the disks as weapons As another feature of the indoor shows Malafronte stands at opposite foul lines on a basketball court and flips the disk through the basket This really gets the crowds excited he said When performing during halftime shows for the likes of the NFls Suin' Francisco 49 ers Maiatronte tosses 100-yard field goals Malafronte 29, has been perfecting his talents for seven years The last four years he has been sponsored by the Tequila Sauza Company Frisbee has made me famous All I need is one frisbee and I can entertain 50,000 people, he said As well as being athletic and ar tistic, it's entertaining Among his prizes is a collection of over 600 variations of the Frisbee some valued at $500 Malafronte hopes to promote his personal goals tor the sport He would like to see more sanctioned tournaments in this part of the country Also he strongly supports the hope that one day frisbee will become an Olympic event He holds the record for the longest toss in frisbee history 125 yards Once, in practice I sailed one 140 yards, ne said Competing in the Rose Bowl at the world wide competition. Maiatronte won his title over more than 100 district champions in displays of accuracy, variety and distance Dubbed The Frisbee Wizard , Maiatronte s UM appnarance is the second stop in a nation-wide tour of college campuses We know that the sport has been popular on the UM campus for years, especially with the beautiful weather here Contests tor accuracy, catching the disks by the peak instead of the brim and skimming the disks off the ground are the newest crazes on campus, he said cn Voi. 51 No.2b- FRIDAY/DECEMBER 5,1975 (305) 294-4401 Discount Agency Finally Ready VICTORIA SIMON Hurrtcan® St«H Writer After months of problems, the Undergraduate Student Body Government (USBG) Student Discount Agency will get underway in January when 4,000 discount cards will be available for purchase at registration Secretary for Student Services and Discount Agency Director Andrew Meyer s original funding request to print buyer s guides that would Hst participating stores was slashed from $600 to $400 by the Student Senate Consequently, while the 4 000 student discount cards will be available, only 2.000 buyer s guides have been printed Meyer anticipates student demand will outrun that supply although USBG President Aubin Hill said the guides are a "convenience only' and more will be printed if there is a demand for them Hill said participating stores will display identifying stickers in their windows and in addition a list of stores will be in the Breezeway to inform students where their discount cards will be honored Meyer said savings of 10 to 20 per cent will be available at participating stores for students presenting an agency card These cards will be sold for $2 outside the hbr-ary during registration Currently 40 local businesses including restaurants, boutiques service stations, jewelry and clothing stores have agreed to otter the discount Meyer expects participation will double by next year Since many stores are dependent on student business, the program is likely to have a snowball effect, he said He expects Non-participating merchants to discover their clientelle has shitted to a competitor who has joined the discount club "When you consider that $7-million was cashed at the university check cashing window last year, you realize the university s influence within the community is staggering." Meyer said According to Meyer, the program, if successful, is likely to enhance community relations and encourage student interest in USBG Andrew Meyer Meyer said he encountered a general lack of trust' among area merchants but felt the program would demonstrate that student organizations could deal fairly and honestly with community agents "Students will also be able to see that USBG is working for them and perhaps more people will he encouraged to get involved he said. Funding for the program, according to Meyer, has been provided by a USBG loan and a $10 charge to each participating store These monies have been used to print the student discount cards and the discount stickers The $2 student card charge will be used to repay the loan and to print additional buyers guides which Meyer hopes will include additional stores enlisted in the program during the semester USBG Senator Resigns Position GARY MATERA Hurricane Staff W'>»er Junior-at-large Senator Nelson Conde resigned his Undergraduate Student Body Government (USBG) position Monday because he felt, the power of USBG is in the hands of a few individuals who castrate their colleagues in order to accomplish their objectives as they see fit for their own gratification I find this organization reaching out tor straws but grabbing only air USBG is like a man performing a high wire act and falling down, Conde said Conde s resignation was based on his disappointment in the areas that the student government has dealt with this year He also said his position interfered with his |Ob as Resident Assistant (RA) on the Mahoney dormitory s third floor his studies were also being neglected 'I have been spreading myself too thin, my grades are suffering and I don t really have enough time to do what I would like in the senate along with being an RA he said "I got the feeling that I wasn t wanted or needed m the senate Very few representatives know “The power of USBG is in the hands of a few individuals who castrate their colleagues in order to accomplish their obiectives as they see fit for their own gratification " each other, and others refuse to work with each other Conde said USBG Vice President Carl Walton said. "I think Conde e resignation is a cop out Right now we are way understaffed so the senators should not sit around and complain, but try to do something about it." Conde made his decision to resign over the Thanksgiving holidays because he felt USBG was wasting time and wasn t concerned with the basic student needs Secretary of Academic Affans Byron Saunders said T find Mi Conde s resignation letter confus mg and petty His affect on any viable proposals to the student government has been nil USBG President Aubin Hill agreed He said in his one year as senator Conde did not produce one piece of legislation All the accusations he made were things he could have done himself. Hill said I am ashamed of the petty politics and the back stabbing that goes on there the lack of knowledge about this government and the lack of motivation that seems apparent in the student representatives Conde said USBG Senate Denounces Resolution Against Zionism It seems that the executive, judicial and legislative branches either compete against each other, or are content to exist in limbo Fraternity Senator Dan Boyar said Many people in the recent past have severly criticized USBG and the Senate in particular Conde does however have some good points concerning a lackluster and do-nothing senate Conde s resignation comes at a time when USBG is already running undermanned They are now without a secretary two oft cam pus south senators, a senior at large two juniors at large off campus central.
