Establishing a shuttle that runs to and from the Grove has been an ongoing project since the ‘80s. “I can remember when my son attended the University," said loanne Baribeau. “I had to send him extra cab money so he could get around to the local hangouts’’. The shuttle was implemented after Student Government, Pier 21, the Dean of Students Office, BACCUS, GAMMA, and the Department of Transportation gathered feedback and suggestions from students. “Over one and a half years of student polling has gone into this project," said Michael Johnston, SG Speaker of the Senate. “It was time to provide a free and safe transportation service to and from the Grove.” “I think that a lot of students will use this new transportation to the Grove,” said Jay Wetzel, a Resident Assistant in Stanford. “I’ve only been to Coconut Grove once since my freshman year,” said sophomore Heather Hickey. “I can never find safe parking that I can actually afford”. The issue of student safety was a primary concern among those seeking to implement the new shuttle service. “I’ve spoken with a lot of students who would rather drink and drive than leave their car overnight," said Johnston. “With this service, students won’t have to put themselves in that type of situation”.
