Weaver takes over presidency Espinosa touts SG’s successes during term By Brian Petit Hurricane Staff Writer Shane Weaver was inaugurated as Student Government (SG) president on Thursday at the Rathskeller, along with five other members of the new SG Executive Board. The ceremony also officially marked the end of terms for President lleana Espinosa and her executive board. The inauguration ceremony began with a retrospective on work done by Student Government under Espinosa’s administration. The goals of that government had been to make SG more “approachable” and to serve the student body. According to those present, those goals were accomplished. ___111 yuu accomplished what you set out to accomplish,” said Patricia Whitely, vice president for Student Affairs, to Espinosa during the ceremony In her farewell speech, Espinosa briefly highlighted the various accomplishments of SG in the past year, praised the efforts of her executive board, and expressed gratitude to University administrators for their support during her tenure. She ended her speech reiterating the goal of Student Government approachabilitv and her feeling that the goal had been accomplished. “We definitely have made Student Government more approachable," she said Following Espinosa’s speech, SG Supreme Court Chief lustice )on Gurney swore in each new member of the Executive Board as Espinosa and the former executive board looked on. Inaugurated were Cie Chapel as vice president, lose Diaz as speaker of the Senate, Lily Guallar as cabinet coordinator, Rubin Jean as speaker pro tempore, Michael lohnston as chief of staff, and Weaver as president Margaux Manley, the new treasurer, and Annette Diaz, the new executive secretary, were not present. Once formally sworn in as president, Weaver delivered his inauguration speech, promising big things from himself and the Student Government under his leadership in the coming year. “We will be the hardest working e-board from top to bottom,"he said. Weaver recognized the standard set by the previous Student Government. “We follow in the footsteps of what was a ureal e-ho»nt “ Hr Although Weaver promised the dedicated efforts of himself and Student Government, he stressed the impor tance of student body involvement in the SG process. “It is you the student body who will get things done," he said. “All students are empowered to take action at this school." Weaver also stressed his belief that students upset with conditions at UM needn’t accept them “We can’t accept that with which we aren’t happy with," he said. “Together we can shake the foundations of this university,” he added. Weaver ended his speech by recog nizing the challenges facing Student Government and the ability of the executive board. “We know we’re up it," he said. Gus Gerenstein, an SG senator representing Eaton Residential College, was present at the inauguration and. like Weaver, said that he has faith in the new executive board. “| The new board] is going to change everything for the better," he said. However, Gerenstein also praised the previous executive board, particularly in accomplishing their approach-ability goal. “Students, even if they don’t care, at least know who we are," he said, retierring to the relatively low profile of previous Student Governments. lean said he has high hopes for the new executive board of which he is a member One of the strengths of the board, he said, lies in its diversity. “We have a diverse, well-balanced e-board,’’said lean. Weaver agreed, citing the fact that the president, vice president and trea- *tm-r werf f»!1 elected on an individual basis, rather than together from the same ticket. “Whether it’s diversity of leader ship, experience or character, it’s all there," Weaver said after the ceremony. Weaver addressed a hot topic among I'M students: whether or not UM administrators actually care about the students. Lauderdale, Florida “One of my friends was raped and I'm not that assertive, so 1 want to be more confident so that I don’t have to worry," said recent graduate famie Kaminetsky “The mam reason I came was because I want to be prepared if something like this occurs,” said sophomore lulie Davis. “This coarse is a must for every woman to be aware and prepared Kellichian offers basic defense techniques that really work and "he really wants to help," said Meral Ehrenstein, one of Kelljchian's former students “He knows what he is talking about,” she said “He not only helps young people, hut his classes range from teenagers to elderly women. Keiljchian said Booth chosen as 2000 Student of the Year By Reynold Rosa News Editor Student employees at the University of Miami will be honored this week ihrough National Student Employment Week, an event that is being sponsored through the Office of Student Employment (OSE), and campus employers According to the OSE, activities planned for the week will include a free lunch for student employees today at the University Center Patio and discounts at the bookstore and food court on Wednesday. Students must present a pay stub in order to receive the free food and discounts The OSE will also hold a breakfast on Wednesday in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Miami Commitment Program Information obtained from the OSE said the purpose of the Miami Commitment Program is to help students sharpen and develop job skills that will help them throughout their careers. Awards that will be presented at the breakfast include the Newcomer Award, Employei of the Year and the America Reads Award, said Omayra Rodriguez, a student employment advisor. The award for Student Employee of the Year was presented to senior |-me Booth, a membership supervisor at the Wellness Center on March 28, said Rodriguez The award was given to her at an informal ceremony during a Wellness Center staff meeting, she said. “I knew I was being nominated,” said Booth, “but I didn’t know I was going to get it. I was doing a presentation and got a pleasant sur prise" “One of |-me’s greatest strengths is her eagerness to learn as much as she can about the Wellness Center," wrote Patty Swift, Booth's super visor, in her recommendation for Booth's nomination. “You will never hear | me say ’it’s not my job’ or go ask somebody else’ What you will hear from I me is’l can help’or‘let me find out for you.’" Along with the award, Booth will also be given a $1,000 scholarship.
