Ludacris in da house - maybe By Jean-Paui Renaud Hurricane Staff Writer The University of Miami is nestled in a city whose diversity defines its identity, yet a report submitted by the Faculty Senate’s Women and Minorities Committee shows a lack of diversity among faculty in most of the schools and colleges at the university. The report found that: * Of the 1,916 faculty members on campus,4% are black, 16% are Hispanic and 32% are female. * Of the 44 full professors in the School of Law, nine are temale. * Of the 253 full professors at the School ot Medicine, 41 are temale and three are black, non Hispanic. * Of the 90 full-time faculty mem hers at the Rosensteil School, none are black, and of the 47 full professors, three ate female. * The highest number of black professors is found in the School of Education, where they comprise 9% of the faculty of 47. * On average, a woman with the title of full professor earns $3,78« less than her male counterpart. The committee, chaired by Or. lane Connolly, an associate professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages, submitted the report on May 2,2«) 1. The report looks at each school and college and tries to pinpoint statistics in salary and rank for women and minorities. The report does, however, have its critics. Dr. Steven Green, Chair of the Faculty Senate, questions the source from which the data is gathered. “There are many different sources for the same information, each giving a different number,’’ Green said. Dr. Connolly sees one of her top challenges this year as refining the collection of data. She said as a result of the criticisms to the report in May, it was revised and resubmitted. Hurricane Productions had tentatively announced that Ludacris may headline Hurricane Howl, the University’s annual fall concert. Hurricane Howl will replace the original fall concert, the SOURCE Fascination Tour. The Fascination lour, which was also scheduled to hit the campus October 26th, was slated to have Krayziebone from the multi-platinum rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony as the headliner. However, all those plans went astray when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked on September 11th. Six days later, the Fascination Tour indefinitely postponed all their dates due to “travel, product and talent scheduling difficulties due to the tragedy,” according to the SOURCE press release. The unfortunate announcement suddenly left Hurricane Productions in a hind. “I was obviously surprised when I heard the announcement,” said senior Graham Micone, the Concert Chair of Hurricane Productions. “I figured maybe they would postpone a couple weeks’ worth of shows, hut I certainly understood the circumstances." The announcement left Micone with very limited time to find a replacement, but he was determined to make sure that the concert went on as scheduled. “We worked with a middle agent, directly finding artists available on our date within a certain price range, and then sent them an offer which they either accepted or turned down,” Micone said. Ludacris continues a long list of major headliners from fall concerts of the past; a list including such names as Outkast. Third Eye Blind, and Blessid Union of Souls. Also known as Chris Bridges, Ludacris is an Atlanta based rapper whose debut album Hack to the First Time sold over 30,000 copies in its first three weeks with the help of massive radio airplay of his first single “What’s your Fantasy?" and was picked up by Def (am. Hurricane Productions is hoping that the concert will help encourage people to join the organization. Hurricane Productions is an entertainment organization on campus run by students on a voluntary basis. The organization plans entertainment events and guest speakers at the university. More information can be found by visiting their website at www.rmami.edu/hurricane-productions. “We encourage all students to join and get involved," said senior Breanna Burkett, the Cultural Chair of Hurricane Productions.“There is a job for everyone who joins.” As for SOURCE, Hurricane Productions also puts out an annual spring concert and hopes that SOURCE will be involved with that. Relationships Students find couple-dom tough in Miami By Aubrey Andel Hurricane Staff Writer Forbes Magazine ranks Miami as the second best metropolitan area in the United States to fly solo. With this ranking, what are the chances of maintaining a meaningful relationship in a city and campus where singles mingle? “South Beach represents a return to the days when hinge-drinking and casual sex were the norm,” said sophomore jason Silva. He has never been in a relationship. “It’s a place where hedonism is busting out all over the place." “I don’t believe in relationships right now," said Carlos Chialastri, v # suffer in hip, person you have a relationship with in college is probably the person you’re going to marry." She maintains a relationship with her boyfriend back home by talking to him for two hours every night. “There are cute guys at UM, but they don't fit my personality," said Ivob Dip, a transfer student. “People here are superficial. You can’t have a relationship with someone like that.” Dip and her boyfriend of five years in Honduras find the long-distance relationship difficult to maintain. “You want to share every day, what you do, what you feel," she said. By talking twice a week and seeing each other every two months, they continue a healthy relationship. Sophomore Priya Ajula has dated boyfriend from Orlando for almost two years. Jk recently moved to junior. Chialastri’s relationship ended in his sophomore year. Since then he dates mostly people outside of UM. “Personalities at UM vary from the nicest people in the world to the people you simply dread," he said. Zeta Beta Tau fraternity members Darren Zucco and Eric Schneider said it is hard to have a relationship at UM because girls are high maintenance and guys are anti relationship. “There’s a lot of beautiful woman at UM, but they don’t fulfill the men tal side,” said Reave Bell, freshman Bell is in a six-month relationship with his girlfriend in Hartford, CT. “The girls want to marry at 22 and scare all the guys away,” Zucco said. Freshman Danni Bunting substan tiated Zucco’s claims. “College is the time to seal your relationships,” Bunting said. “The hedonistic Miami Miami to be with her. “When you’re in a relationship, you have a best friend," Ajula said. “You share everything with your partner.” “Guys at UM are fun, but you’ll rarely find a guy here with whom you could have a relationship," Ajula said. “I cart he very impulsive and have one-night stands," Silva said. “It’s hard to be with one person,” said Schneider, who broke up with his UM girlfriend two months ago. He is currently single. “I don’t think people in Miami even want to be in relationships,” Dip said. Chialastri’s advice to the women of UM: “You should never date in-the-closet guys. They have there fun, after that, they don’t even say hi to you " Relationships affect social life, aca demies and living situations, I'M students agree. "School life is better now that he’s not away,” Ajula said. "But my single life is more difficult because I see my girlfriends going out all the time." So where should singles go to meet people in this second-best city for them? Zucco and Schneider recommend Paulo Luigi’s in the Grove. “It’s a place for us io meet others from our school," Zucco said. Chialastri said never go out with the mindset of meeting somebody. “lust go out and have fun; that's how vou’ll meet someone,” he said. “If you’re looking tor one-time flings or unattached fun. It was scheduled to be completed before Orientation Week but was set back to Family Weekend. Last week, completion was delayed another two weeks. Why has it taken so long for this project to be finished? "We spent a significant amount of time making plans, searching for various contractors and arcade game providers and considering proposals from companies all over South Florida,” said Richard Walker, Director of the University Center and Student Life. Other recent improvements to the University Center include the opening of the new University Credit Union branch, the addition of school-colored tiles in the area by the new game room, and the widening of the walkway between the pool entrance and the convenience store. “The games area was the eyesore of the University Center and the only part of the building that had not undergone any major renovations,"Walker said. “The old game room was-in two words-depressingly sad. The arcade games were outdated and overpriced and the rug was musty and stained,” said Oscar De La Pena, an employee at the game room for over two years. “I’m glad the University has provided me with a more favorable work environment." Years ago, the recreational area of the University Center included, among other things, an eight-lane bowling alley. In 1994, it was replaced by the Toppel Center. A howling alley was not included in the planning of the new games area. “After the bowling alley was demolished, the University Center lost a substantial amount of revenue,” said Marcos Zapata, University Center Building Operations Evening Supervisor. “We considered building another one, but we just don’t have enough room." Improvements to the new game room include brand new arcade games, new pin ball and pool tables, seven television sets, an E-center equipped with laptop ports for checking e mail and logging on to EASY, and a state-of-the-art speaker system.
