themiami hurricane VOL 7. THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF THE I INTV ERSITY OF MIAMI iiiMiimmiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimimiiiiiiii THIS WEEK iiiiMMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiimmmiiiiin Bv Smith Perkins CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA, MAY 5, 1933 NO. 28 Alumni Dinner Is, In Honor Of Seniors The political pot gets warmer aBd warmer each Cay as added candidates cast their hats in the ring. All official news of candidates other than straight news items on election will be carried in this this column. It looked for a time like John Allen would be the lone candidate but the last few days of this week, friends of Stanford “Pim” Kimbrough have persuaded him to enter the campaign. Prospects for a fiery campaign are not so promising. However, the final date for the entering of petitions is May 10th. Allen has been doing some hard campaigning and according to his campaign literature “Allen is still in the race and don’t forget it.” It appears that Kimbrough will not take an active part in the campaign but will depend upon the support of the students who are backing him for the office. The office of vice president has only one aspirant, the vivacious Aileen Booth, who it is probable will be the only candidate. This office is rather secondary, as all vice-presidencies, are, however the fact remains that in the two past years the vice presidents have succeeded to the presidency. The secretary and treasurer office which is usually held by women students has also only one avowed candidate, in that of Nedra Mac-Namara. The law school has not held their caucus and decided on who they will run for the offices of chief justice and prosecuting attorney. Only two candidates have announced themselves, James Mool and James Koger, for associate justices of the honor court. But political observers predict a mad scramble of petitions the last minute. Chances for the organization of political parties appear very slim this year. The predicted outcome is that a coalition of the leading candidates will be formed rather than any direct attempt at the party system. The good of such a movement is much to be desired over that of the selfish party system, which permeates undergraduate politics. The administration has not set any definite quota for students for the coming year but it is expected that it will be substantially larger than this year. Have you secured your new student? If each student now enrolled would attract one new student, our enrollment would be just about right. Testimony as to the worth of the university may be given by the value in which it is held by its students and the manner in which it is patronized by the home towners. It has been said that a prophet is without honor in his own country, but this is not true of the university when it plays such an important role in the educational work of south Florida; when more than half of the teachers in Dade County have taken collegiate study or have graduated from the school. Write to your home town high school and get the graduation list. Write to the boy or girl friend and interest him in studying in the tropics and above all interest our local high school students in coming here. They too will enjoy studying here.
