The Miami Hurricane voTxx Coxal Gables, Florida, April 5,1946 No. 22 O'Brien Chosen Pike 'Dream Girl' President Norman Ashe announced Peggy O’Brien, Chi Omega, is the 1946-47 Dream Girl of Pi Kappa Alpha at the MacFadden Deauville hotel, Saturday evening. As the orchestra played the Dream Girl song. Dr. Freeman H. Hart, National executive secretary of the fraternity who is visiting here, gave her the fraternity sweetheart pin. Alice Cook, last year’s dream girl, presented Peggy with a bouquet of red roses. Preceding the dance, fraternity members, pledges, alumni and their guests attended a dinner in celebration of the fraternity’s Founder’s Day. Favors given at the dinner for each member and his date were gold sabers with the fraternity crest. The dance was under the direction of Bob Holland who acted as chairman. Assisting him were Charlie Franklin, invitations; Gene Han-cock and Tom Ellis, decorations. Member of the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the University of Florida attended the dance as did Dr. Bowman F. Ashe. Mr. and Mrs. Walt Kichefski, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Muller acted as chaperons. AEPhi To Present Fashion Show Twelve co-eds, one of which will be chosen “The Model University Miss,” will become models for a day on Saturday, April 13, when Alpha Epsilon Phi presents its first pre-Easter Fashion Show and Tea dance at the Lord Tarleton hotel. Highlight of the show will be the selection of “The Model University Miss,” by Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, University president; Mrs. Ashe; Paul Bruun, Sun Tropics columnist; Leon Jabaly, of Sraeel and Jabaly; Miss Florence Gibbons, fashion editor of the Miami Daily News, and Miss Eileen Bryne, fashion editor of the Miami Herald. The winner will receive a scholarship to Gibson Girls’ Miami Modeling school, a silver cup donated by Sigma Chi, and she and her escort will be guests of Murray Weinger at his Copacabana club for the evening. Representatives of Alpha Epsilon Phi will not be eligible for the award. The twelve models for a day, elected from the various sororities on campus and other groups, include: Mary Galatis, Delta Zeta; Betty Passmore, Delta Gamma; Emmy Lou Bourne, Kappa Kappa Gamma; Bette Jo Wilson, Chi Omega; Jackie Jennings, Independents; (Continued on Page 8) u Granted Building Permit The University of Miami has been issued a building permit for $36« .000 to start construction on the first classroom building on the new campus. Students To Attend Convention in Deland Mark Brown, Student association president, has appointed six people to attend the convention of the Florida Intercollegiate Press association. Student Recreation Building To Be Erected, Ready In Two Weeks \ temporary student recreation building will be erected and ready for use within two weeks, Dr. J. Riis Owre, dean of the administration, announced Wednesday. Foundational concrete blocks were laid today for the building which will be on the triangle Mary B. Merritt, dean of women and past president of the National Panhellenic congress, will address sorority women on What the Fraternity Offers Its Members' at the Panhellenic Workshop Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Margaret Blue Council president, has announced. Following Miss Merritt’s speech, the group will divide into four sections for roundtable discussions. Students may attend the discussion which most interests them. Mrs. William Bordeaux will conduct a section on Rushing Technique and Mrs. Horace Seepe will lead the topic. Privileges of a Pledge. Duties and Responsibilities of Officers will be led jointly by Mrs. H. R. Cole and Mrs. G. A. Chapman. Mrs. W. S. Christopher and Mrs. Forrest Haines will head the section on A Balanced Program. Additional speakers and student leaders will be announced later. The Workshop program has been planned by Chairman Barbara Walsh specifically for fraternity women ind pledges, but any woman stu ient may attend. The University is attempting to get surplus furniture from the Army and Navy, but pieces can only be added spasmodically, so that they will be temporary and makeshift for the present. However, the administration will equip the building as quickly as poasible, Dean Owre said, and students who have any card tables, ping pong tables, or other furniture which they would like to contribute are urged to help. Permission for erecting the new building was granted by the city commission to Mr. William Hester, secretary of the University, who appeared before the commission merting Monday night Recognizing the students’ needs, Dr. Owre has been working for several weeks on the nev» recreation center, which should show skeptical students the desire of the administration for cooperation with the student body. Hjort Issues Warning To Low Grad* Students Students with poor scholastic records at the end of the semester will not be permitted to register in the Fall, Dr. Elmer V. Hjort, dean of the liberal arts college, announced Wednesday. Although warnings are now being mailed, the failure to receive such a warning will not prevent a student’s dismissal at the end of the semester If his record warrants it ara’s committee. HNIel To Crown King, Queen Tomorrow Crowning of the HiUel king and queen will be the feature of the annual Spring formal to be held at HiUel house Saturday from 8 to 12 pjn.. President Fern Matros announced today. Candidates for the title have been put up by the various sororities and fraternities. They are Lenny Tan-nenbaum, Alpha Epsilon Phi; Larry Levine, Delta Phi Epsilon; Dave Moldan. Iota Alpha Pi; Bea Jaffee, Tau Epsilon Phi; Rita Weiss, Phi Epsilon Pi; Nessa Gittleman, Qeo Phi. Gifts wiU be presented to the winners by last year’s queen, Lorraine Walters. Arrangements for the dance are under the supervision of Roalyn Taradash, social chairman. Ginsberg Appoints Election Board; Petitions Due 17th Petitions for candidates for the four offices of the Student association are to be turned in by norm. April 17, to the secretary of the Association, Caroline Hunter. The number of names on the petition for a potential candidate must be 240, Caroline announced, and she further suggested that the number be raised to 250 to take care of names which, appearing on the petitions of more than one candidate, must be crossed off both. Dan Ginsberg, chief justice of the Honor Court, has appointed the following people to the election board: chairman, John Harlow; senior representative, Alice Cook; junior, Irv Geringer; sophomore. Bert Ginsberg; and freshman, Ann Childress. The election board is given full control over Student association elections by the University constitution. It certifies the qualifications of candidates upon receiving their names from the secretary; gives the constitutional test to all candidates for Senate and class offices, and Senators; notifies qualified nominees of their candidacy; prints the ballot; notifies the student body of the time and place of elections, and maintains proctors at the polls on election day; counts and records the ballots; and notifies the candidates and student body of election outcomes. McGrew, Flynn Honored By KKG Kappa Kappa Gamma initiated thirteen new members Saturday They are Janice Boher, Emmy Lou Bourne, Dawn Carroll. Barbara Davidson, Pat Giering, Ruth Harris, Rosalie Hill, Cornelia Jones, Helen King, Betty McGrew, Nancy McGrew, Betty Jo Rumbaugh. and Lorraine Skinner, who now wear the Kappa key. Following the ceremony, the initiates were entertained with a formal banquet at the Garden restaurant Emmy Lou Bourne was presented with a pin for having the highest scholarship, while the ring for being beat pledge was awarded to Betty McGrew. Also, a ring for highest scholarship among the actives was awarded to Mary Flynn. The initiation week-end. which started with a fireside meeting Friday night ended Sunday afternoon with a picnic at Tahiti beach for the new Kappas and their pledge-mothers. Pikes WiU Give Dance Tonight Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity will sponsor a dance after the annual spring game, tonight from 10 45 pan. to 12:45 am., in the cafeteria. Music will be provided by a juke box and admission wiU be twenty-five cents. The winning team members and their dates will be guests of honor.
