JUnmplaining on the lack of financial aid due to a smaller federal budget, Lacey said, “It is doubtful that those who are receiving financial aid will receive what they have been receiving in the past." Lacey, a Junior, who cares not to be President of UBS next year because of the desire to get through his studies, will coordinate UBS nominations for next year’s presidency on Wednesday in the Afro Center at 7;30 p.m. “It Is hard to incorporate all five hundred graduate and undergraduate students into UBS. There is a feeling that not much can be done with the administration as students feel that they were not any better off than in 1969 during the Black Movement on campus," Lacey said. By BOBB HANE Of The Hurricane Staff Administrators guzzling beer and a chorus line which included Mimi McHenry (Dr. Carl McHenry) and Oui Oui Winneman (Howard Winneman) were part of Wednesday of Student Appreciation Week, which was observed last week. A festive air pervaded the Rat Wednesday night as students and administrators participated in a beer drinking contest. A skit which included Kay Whitten and James Gaimm in the lead roles was performed during the intermission of the beer drinking contest. Grimm wanted to make Polly (Kay Whitten) marry him in exchange for not foreclosing the mortgage on her homestead. Polly is in love with Parceville Parsons and will only marry him. She is tied to the railroad track by Grimm but is saved by her lover Parceville. One round of the beer drinking contest could he called the Student Body Government round. Participating were Sami Burstyn, Kevin Poeppelman and Scott Anderson. Each was or is part of student government. Several whistles were heard as Burstyn unbuttoned his shirt to prepare for the heat. Kevin Poeppelman was victorious in that round. Black studies is represented by Afro American Studies Department at UM, “hut it is just a front so the administration can say they have one on campus,” Lacey said. Alex Stevens, speaker-elect of the Student Senate, agrees with Lacey and says, “the administration doesn’t seem to be getting the message." (He was dragged out of his chair.) After numerous rounds of the beer drinking contest Dean Sandler was declared the winner for the administration and Richard Ney known as Godzilla was declared the winner for the students. Howard Winneman challenged the winner to a contest but came in a poor third. After the skit a chorus line “the likes of which have not been seen in Las Vegas” performed. The UM Kicking Cuties were Mimi McHenry, Salome Sheeder, Gigi Giampetro, Bubbles Butler, Oui Oui Winneman, Kiki K I a 11, Poo Poo Pineda, Rhonda Hammond, and Fifi Foley. Students seemed to enjoy the festivities at the Rat. One Sugarman Elected UBOG Chairman By SCHUYLER PULFORD Of The Hurricane Staff The Union Board of Governors (UBOG) elected Risa Sugarman their first woman chairperson last Thursday. Sugarman. a past Pan-hellenic representative and presently an SBG senator, feels being a woman will not hinder her ability in handling the leadership role of UBOG. “I think I can handle this job as well as anyone, man or woman,” Sugarman said. UBOG, the governing body that regulates procedures and policies of the Student Union, is represented by 10 voting students from organizations such as SBG, IFC, COISO and AWS. Administrators faculty, and alumni ’Cane Sports Aivards Tennis coach Dale Lewis and UM swimmer David Wilkie have been named the Hurricane coach and athlete of the year. The annual award also includes the outstanding athletes in each individual sport and for each story, see today's Hurricane sports section. In this column on page nine, sports editor Roy Berger explains who voted the awards for excellence in University of Miami athletics. make up the rest of the 19 voting members. Better student-faculty-administrative relations, much more student feedback and better cooperation between organizations using union facilities are Sugarman's plans for the coming year. Student Entertainment Committee (SEC), which plans campus concerts, must deal with UBOG before any concerts can be held and therefore "I will be working closely with A! White (SEC chairman) on finalizing the sound policy for patio concerts," Sugarman said; This year a Health Club was developed by William Sheeder, director of the Student Union. Located by the pool, the club has the newest Universal weight-lifting equipment and was designed for use by men and women. “But,” says Sugarman, “there has been very little participation by women. We hope to conduct a random sampling on women’s feelings toward working out with men.” “This Student Union is a campus community center and I am looking forward to making the Student Union truly responsive to the whole community,” Sugarman said. coed had this to say about the events, “It was all great. You could almost believe this school cares for more than my money.” Another student stopped as he was leaving the Rat had this to say, 'I saw administrators and teachers tonight that I never knew existed and I have been here for three years now.” The spirit ran high Wednesday night. For one night, at least, UM’s nationally known problem with apathy was nowhere to be seen. .Students and the administrators were on an equal basis. They were friends. Other activities of Student Appreciation Week included free food and coffee, free bowling and swimming, a water ski show, free hands and free movies such as The Graduate and Fantasia. The most evident part of Student Appreciation Week was the balloons which wished the students a “happy day from the establishment." The week has been pronounced a success by Kay Whitten. Commenting on Student Appreciation Week William Sheeder, director of student activities, said, “Student Appreciation Week is dedicated to our grateful recognition of the student body at the University of Miami ” Which Way Is Up? Did you ever get the feeling that living in the UM dorms is causing you to climb walls, spin in circles or reach for new' nighs. However, if dorm living has left you with an empty feeling in your stomach or mind remember that there is only two weeks left before the close of the school year.
