Page 2 THE MIAMI HURRICANE Tuesday, March 8,1994 NEWBRIEFS YEARBOOK ELECTIONS VOLUNTEER AWARD MOVED TO MARCH 9 NOMINATIONS DUE Trespass warning issued to previous dorm burglar Editor in chief of the Ibis yearbook will be elected during a meeting of the Board of Publications at noon March 9th. The position is open to all fulltime undergraduate students who have at least a 2.5 grade point average. Applications are available in the Hurricane office. University Center 221. The position includes tuition reimbursement. “We decided to move the elections up so the new editor can come to North Carolina to see the book being printed,” Danielle Parks, Ibis editor in chief, said. Students, faculty, and administrators may nominate the graduating senior of their choice for the tenth annual Award for Excellence in Student Involvement. To be eligible, seniors must have at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate extensive involvement and achievement in university and community programs, and demonstrate a commitment to helping other students. Nominations should be submitted in writing to Jennifer Willen, Director of Commuter Student Affairs, UC 209. Deadline is March 9. By ZULIMA ROSENOW Hurricane Staff Writer Charles Allwood, 23, who was arrested for burglarizing UM student Alyce Setton’s dorm last October, was issued a trespass warning and read the Miranda rights Tuesday after students, who knew he had already been issued one trespass warning, noticed him near apartment 30L at 1262 Dickinson Drive, police reports said. At noon that same day Allwood had apparently been following Set-ton. She was leaving the University Center when Allwood approached her and asked where her cousin Alisen Setton was. Alyce said,”I don’t know, I have to go back inside.” Allwood said, “Why, you’ve been in there for an hour.” Setton told her cousin what happened and went to class. Alyse Setton told police Allwood left a message on her answering machine saying, "I know where you live.” Alisen Setton said she met the suspect, who posed as a UM student, before October. ■ Sometime after 12:40 p.m. Wednesday Michael Becerra witnessed a man in a van pull up to UM Public Safety Officer Alex Silva’s 1993 GMC Van, pop out the driver’s lock with a screwdriver and remove Silva's .380 Semi-automatic pistol located in a case under the passenger’s seat, police said. When the alarm went off the subject fled. The gun was valued at $480 and the case at $59. The vehicle was parked on the 5100 Block of University Dr., UM Lot 209.
