December 19. 19A0 No. 6 Sixty University Students Named On Second Month’s Roll of Honor Increase of 17 Students is Made This Month Over First Month Honor roll for the second month oS school at ‘the University of Miami shows that an increase of seventeen students was made over that of the first month, but failed to reach the mark set this time last year when sixty-five students' names apneared on the roll. According to the honor roll released this morning by Dean Harry Provin, exclusively to The Miami Hurricane, sixty students made the roll, while only forty-three received this mention last month. Dr. B. F. Ashe personally sent his congratulations to the students making the roll and isaid that he was delighted to see the increase in the number of students on the honor roll. Each college in the University will have an editor as a regular member of the editorial staff of the Ibis. Each college will have a section including pictures of the members of the faculty of the college, a description of its offerings and achievements, and the classification of its students. Starace will select the editors in the near future. ——MERRY XMAS---— Gerstel Authorized to Film School Activities Victor Gerstel, a law student, has received authorization from Dr. Ashe to begin making a campus film of the various school activities. The aviation department, out-board motor club, wrestling team, swimming classes, sorority and fraternity affairs will all be featured according to. the present plans of Gerstel. Any organization that would like to have any affairs of importance filmed can notify Mr. Gerstel by dropping a note in the University mailbox. New "Prop" Designed By Aviation Dept. A new propellor of revolution- j ary construction has been designed and tested' in the University Aviation shop. This propellor has been designed by Wilson and Bates, two experienced tool makers, work i'ng under the supervision of Fred H. Given. This new propellor was tested for tensile strength last Sunday, behind closed doors, and the tests were very satisfactory. The blade-of it are so constructed that through an adjustment by th" pilot while in the cockpit, the pitch can be changed through an angle of sixty degrees. This new development is said to be of great value as the pitch of the propellor can be changed while in the air to increase climbing speed, and also to decrease landing speed. The Heath Monoplane that was completed here last year by the students of the Aviation course, which was slightly wrecked two weeks ago, is nearly ready for the final touches of dope and linen. The efforts of the Aviation class will then be turned to completing the other two planes which are being built. - - MERRY XMAS-—— Gaywood Gets Interesting Photos of Frosh in Cuba William B. Gaywood who is associated with the publicity department of the University of Miami returned Tuesday afternoon from Havana. Cuba where he attended the game between the university freshman team and the Vedado Tennis Club of that city. The entire trip was made via the Pan American Airway Line. While in Havana he made pictures of Professor Longnecker in interesting poses with officials of the city and Cuban government and pictures of Cliff Courtney talking it over with Mayor Miguel Gomez of Havana. Pictures of the entire freshman squad on the steps of the University of Havana also constitute a small portion of many pictures made in that city. When asked about the flight Mr. Gaywood stated, “It was the most enjoyable flight I have ever taken. Probably the most interesting scene was that of the Florida Keys from an altitude of 6000 feet and traveling at a rate of 115 miles in hour." —■ MERRY XMAS—— Wing and Wig Club Play Postponed Until January The W ing and Wig offering scheduled for December 18th has been postponed until two weeks after the Christmas holidays. The play is “On the Hiring Line” by Harry O'Higgins and Harriet Ford. It is a three act play revealing the difficulties of the servant problem. The setting is a country home in* a small town in New Jersey. The cast includes Louis S. Cohen, Marion Wallace, Lucile Muchler,-Margaret Sweat, Gilbert Broma-ghin, Richard 1 Pomeroy, Irwir. Jaffee, Ruth Arrant, and Guy Mitchell. Court«»* Miami Herald 1 50 Men Investigate Employment Project George E. Merrick’s plan for student employment reached a further stage of development last week-end when he and a party of men students from the University completed a series of observation trips to Matecumbe Key, wher-Mr. Merrick expects to employ as many as possible from 150 students showing interest in this project. Employment at first will be the sale of excursion tickets at four dollars each to Matecumbe, where various forms of amusements will be offered. The tickets will have attached to them coupons' which will give the holders access to the fishing pier where fishing equipment will be furnished; the yacht club; the swimming pier, where there will be separate bathing areas for men and women and a director of both. Students proving themselves capable as lecturers will be engaged in conducting and directing these excursions. Later the tickets may be extended to women students who become interested in this project. Jij&nie Abras, John Allen, and Marvin Greer furnished excitement for the party when the boat in which they were sailing capsized about a mile off the coast. There were no disastrous results, however, and the party returned safely. «According to reports from the men who made the trip this venture should prove successful. ---MERRY XMAS- Phi Alpha Sends Two Men To National Convention Phi Alpha fraternity, one of the strongest on the campus, is petitioning Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the National Convention held at Evanston, 111., December 27, 28, and 29. Ray Weakly and Walter Harm»-have been chosen as representatives, and vill probably leave Miami about tlje 24th of this month. The representatives plan, by the showing of movies of the school and fraternity, to present their case to the Convention. They will also show pictures, and products i of south Florida, such as coconuts, baby alligators, grapefruit, etc. University Sorority To Offer Scholarship For the first time in the history of the University a sorority will sponsor a scholarship fund to finance a University student. The Upsilon Lambda Phi sorority has announced that their organization will offer a scholarship to some ' deserving' student for the year 1931-1932. The scholarship will be awarded either to a member of the Miami High School graduating class of ■1931 or to some deserving woman itudent of the University who is not financially able to carry on her work. The award will be made during the summer of ’31. The committee in charge of the project is to pick the winner of the scholarship fund. If the candidate is chosen from the University, Miss Mary B. Merritt, Dean of Women, will assist in the selection. A series of benefit affairs will be given by the sorority for this purpose. ’ ---MERRY XMAS-- Architecture Dept, of U. to be Inspected Inspection of the University of Miami architectural department this spring or next fall with a view to recognition by the Florida Association of Architects is anticipated following the annual convention of the association and the Florida chapter of Architects held two weeks ago in Fort Myers. If recognized, graduates of the school will be permitted to practice in the state after having two years of offire work and passing an examination given by the board. Mr. Skinner, head of the architectural department, was accompanied by seniors in his department who were presented to the convention and invited to attend the sessions. Examples of tbeir work were highly commended by the architects. The ultimate aim of the school is to gain admittance to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture whose members include such schools as Cornell, M. I. T., Columbia and Pennsylvania. “Queen of Clubs’’ Will Be Selected Tonight at Dance Coronation Will Take Place at Mid-Night at Miami Biltmore Hotel The Queen will be crowned! “Long live the Queen". Tonight when the old clock in the Spanish tower of the Miami Biltmore Country Club strikes midnight, the “Queen of Clubs”, of Metropolitan Miami,Will be crowned, amid ringing of bells, the shouting of the multitudes and the rejoicing of loyal subjects for their Queen. The eight young princesses, who were chosen by their sororities and clubs are adding many votes to their total and according to their loyal supporters each is claiming victory. The Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club is in the lead in the number of tickets sold, accordintr to reports given Rhendal Butler, chairman of the dance. Members of the Pi Chi Fraternity, which is sponsoring the dance tonight at the Miami Biltmore for the benefit of the library of the school of architecture, will be in the reception line and will welcome guests. Many of the leading architects of Coral Gables and Miami have accepted invitations to be patrons of the dance. Carlton-Downes orchestra has been engaged for the dance. The “Queen of Clubs” will be honored with gifts and prizes among which will be a handsome loving cup and a $25 photograph. The girls receiving second ‘and third prizes will receive a bridge set and a five pound box of candy respectively. $10 in gold will be given to the sorority or club that sells the most tickets. All clubs must make a report by 2 P. M. this afternoon. $5 will be given the second club selling the most tickets, and a shell table lamp will be awarded the club selling the next number of tickets. •— MERRY XMAS-- College Orchestra Concert To Be Presented Dec. 28 Arnold Volpe will present the first program of the University of Miami Symphony orchestra Dec. 28, at 3:30 p. m. in the Miami Senior High school auditorium. The concert will be a Tschaikow-sky-Wagner program . This is the fifth season of the symphony concerts. Mr. Volpe, founder and first conductor of the Lewisohn Stadium concerts, believes that the programs will be very much improved this year because the musical training of the members is much more advanced than it was last year. The symphony is made up of some of the members of the University Concert orchestra together with students and outsiders who have superior musical ability. The symphony will present a eries of eight afternoon concert.* on alternate Sundays. The season subscription tickets are on sale. The work of the symphony orchestra has been entirely supported by the university for the past four seasons and is this year.
