One of the top features of the plan is the elimination of all temporary shacks and increased grassy areas. Flowered-trees such as the Poinciana trees in front of Memorial Building will be planted around the campus for future beautification rather than increasing the number of palm trees already dotting the grounds. The figures show the locations of the tentatively proposed major building additions and the traffic and parking alterations on campus. 1. Miller Drive. 2. Library Photos by Weasels building. 3. Expansion of Student Union. 4. Possible dormitory site. 5. Lowe Art Gallery expansion. 6. Probable Art school location. 7. West Laboratory School expansion. 8. University Drive. 9 and 10. Communications center. 11. Evening classroom building. 12. Engineering building. 13. Peripheral parking. 14. Science buildings. 15. Music school auditorium, student practice hall and hand building. 16. Intramural facilities. 17. Re-routing fraternity row traffic. 18. Dormitory parking lots renovation. The University of Miami’s Master Plan was released this week by Executive Vice President J. M. Godard. The plan outlines the ultimate development *of the University's .entire educational plant and is revealed here in an exclusive story by The Hur-■ icane to give readers a better insight into the futur^ of UM. Build seven major new buildings plus several smaller ones, construct wings to buildings already completed, re-route roads and traffic on campus, reestablish parking areas, and spend millions of dollars and you have taken the plan off paper and blue prints and made it a reality. Future major additions will include a $3,500,000 library; a $1,250,000 science building; a* $500,000 evening classroom building; a $250,000 communications center, and a $100,000 expansion of Lowe Art Gallery. The above figures are estimates of Vice President and Treasurer Eugene M. Cohen. The library is slated for construction between the Ashe Building and the Baron de Hirsch Meyer Law Building, connecting with the latter. The south corner of the evening classroom building will connect with the right wing of Merrick Building and will run perpendicular to it. The science buildings, comprising three separate units running parallel to each other, will replace the wooden structures now serving the science department. Located almost on top of the present Band Building, and to the right rear of the Panhellenic Building, will be the communications center building which will house the Departments of Journalism, Radio. Television and Film, Speech, and probably the offices of The Hurricane and other student publications. Eventually, the new women's dormitory on Miller Drive, will be expanded to twice its present size and all coeds will be housed there. Eaton Hall and the other women's dormitories on Walsh Ave. and Dickinson Dr. will be turned over Dr. J. M. Godard to male students once the new wo- _ |/,ce President men’s dormitories are completed. A symphony rehearsal hall and a student room building will be added to the School of Music and will be located in the same area as the Music Building and Band Building. The expansion of Lowe Art Gallery will encompass two separate areas. The first addition will run parallel with Miller Road and will hook-up with the main building at the Gallery's front entrance. The second addition will run perpendicular from the northern wall of the gallery. One million dollars was given to the University recently by James N. McArthur, president and owner of McArthur Jersey Farm Dairy, Inc., for the erection of an engineering school building, but plans have not been formed for its construction, nor has a site for it been set aside. Miller Road, which runs past the Student Union and curves around past the Law Building into San Amaro Drive, will end at the SU where it will make a circle to send traffic back out on the double-laned road. University Drive, which runs in front of Merrick Building will also end in a circle in front of Merrick's main entrance. Major parking lots will remain behind the Student Union, next to the Panhellenic Building, the Law Building and behind Doctor's Hospital. The greatest proportion of parking space will be peripheral to the campus itself, situated mostly along San Amaro and Campo Sano Drives. Serious consideration is being given to a student grievance committee recommendation that dormitory area parking lots be relocated from the sides of the buildings to consolidated parking lots in the center of each group of residence halls. In renovating the flow of traffic off Red Road onto the streets running past the fraternity houses on San Amaro Dr. only Apricale, Scadella, Al-benga and Matoro Avenues will be left open. Corniche, Liguria and Brescia Avenues, which would send their traffic flowing past (he front of any future fraternity houses on those streets, will be closed to keep non-University traffic from interfering with student activity in the area. UM officials are also hoping that arrangements can be made and funds secured for the construction of a 16-lane bowling alley as part of the SU expansion. Enlargement of the billiard room and its facilities is expected. A swimming pool with sand beach adjacent to the SU is in the “dream” stage under the present Master Plan. An Intramural Field House housing a gymnasium, locker room and swimming pool will be constructed near the varsity locker room. An Art School Building is also in the planning stage but no conclusion has been drawn as to whether it will be located behind Lowe Art Gallery or in the area around Ring Theater. "By mutual agreement we have decided that the University would take over the operation of the food services,” he said. Returning as director of foods services is Dorothy Johnson who held this position at UM for four years until 1955 when Polly Davis, who is now a member of the Board of Trustees, took it over. Cohen said the University would follow the suggestions made by Owen Weber, a food expert who was hired in the spring as a consultant to investigate the food service. One of the suggestions to be carried out will be the elimination of the cafeterias in both San Sebastian and Eaton Hall. 1926 .. . Merrick Building and a dream The University has contracted the Canteen Co. to provide for the machines. Each machine, no matter what it contains, will be of the same color and enclosed in a metal frame. Cohen said that the University is making extensive plans to improve the food service, but at present the plans are in the talking stage. Some minor changes might be made to improve the serving hours Cohen said and “we will have the budget counter again." The counter offers a complete meal each day at a special price. 1958 ...
