LF Takes Top 4 Posts, Gains Control Of Senate By FRED PORTER Harries» BrflMt Liberty Forum’s Dick Knight rode into the Student Body Government presidency Wednesday night on the smallest majority of votes ever cast in a University presidential race. LF took the four top SBG posts in this all-undergraduate election and swept into control of the Senate. Knight beat All Campus Party’s candidate Steve Slepin, 1,345 to 1,254. Sherman Carr piled up 1,316 votes over Bob Braham’s (ACP) 1,236 to win the vice presidency. Largest number of votes cast for any candidate in the election went to Nanita Greene, LF nominee for secretary. Miss Greene garnered 1,466 ballots to beat Carmen Colon's (ACP) 1,101. In one of the most hotly contested races of the election—that of treasurer—LF’s Phil Mandina grabl>ed 1,329 votes to 863 cast for ACP’s Jack Dick. Edward Kattel. running on the independent ticket, received 355 voles. Knight, speaking before a crowd in the Student Union patio, said, upon hearing that he had been elected: “1 have milled emotions tonight. The greatest feeling is one of relief and gladness that a difficult election is over. “I should like to say to ACP that it could not have picked a finer leader than Steve Slepin. “I am pleased to accept this election, and I'm grateful to the student body. LF has sincerely tried to get a good job done responsibly and efficiently. We will do everything possible to give you a good SBG. ”1 thank you from the bottom of my heart for what I think is the higgrst honor that the student body ran give to one of its students. "No let's all get some rest and look forward to a highly productive year," Knight concluded. Slepin, the defeated presidential candidate, said to the students gathered to hear the results: "At this particular moment your 'Johnny-come-Iately' is a little hard pressed for words." The titular head of ACP said he was proud to represent his party, which is composed of people he truly respects. “I wish Dick Knight, his officers and LF success in the coming year." he continued. “Some have said that ACP should contest the election. We will never compromise our ideals. We concede the election and wish Dick Knight all the luck in the world," Slepin concluded. Outgoing SBG President Leroy Howe, in a statement to The Hurricane, said: "Congratulations to all participants for a hard-fought campaign. The closeness of this year’s returns again indicates the continued development of a 2-party tradition on our campus which I hope will remain in the coming years.” Dr. Thurston Adams, director of student activities, said: “It was certainly the closest contest of an SBG campaign on this campus since I came here in 1947. I feel that there are no finer gentlemen than Dick Knight and Steve Slepin, and I also feel that the election was conducted, with a few slight exceptions, quite well indeed.” In the gubernatorial races, LF took two posts, ACP two positions and an independent won uncontested from the Music School. ACP's Alan Caruba is governor-elect of the College of Arts and Sciences. Vera Sgutt (LF) is lieutenant governor, and M. Margaret Scott (ACP) is secretary (Continued on Page 2)
