DR. PEALE TO SPEAK HERE THURSDAY Story On Pag« 2 The Miami Hurricane Vol. xxxu University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., March 22, 1957 No. 18 Women 's Dorm Loan Ok'cS ★ ★ ★ 2nd Party ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nominates Undergrad Slate Story On Pag« 2 Building To Provide Living Units, Additional Facilities For 720 Coeds By FRED PORTER Humean« Managing Editor % Housing facilities at UM received a $2,695,000 boost Tuesday as officials in Washington announced the approval of a federal loan to the school for the construction of a seven-story women’s dormitory. Congressman Dante Fascell and Senators Spessard L. Holland and George Smathers said the grant had been approved by the Community Facilities Administration of the Housing and Home Finance Administration. Construction is expected to begin on the T-shaped building this sunnier, with September of 1958 planned as the opening date for occupancy. The dorm, which will house 720 women and seven residence counselors, will be almost twice as large as Eaton Hall. Architect Robert M. Little is completing final plans on the building, which will consist of single and double units with private or adjoining baths. The new dorm will have recreation space on the first floor and a sun deck on the roof. The building, as yet unnamed, will be constructed in the area fronting Miller Drive, opposite Hillel Foundation and the other religious buildings, and bordering on Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Placing of the dorm on this site is part of the long-range planning to have all University women housed in this area of the campus. “This grant signifies the confidence of the government that the University’s enrollment will justify this new building," said Dr. James M. Godard, executive vice president and dean of administration. “This means that UM will be able to increase the number of its women students,” he added. “Applications at the moment indicate that such growth in housing facilities will be necessary,” Dr. Godard said. SUSIE MARBEY, president of the All-Campus Party, recent addition to the SBG election picture, joins hands with Leroy Howe (left) and Dick Chapman at the dose of the party’s organisational and nominating convention last Sunday. Howe and Chapman received the presidential and vice-presidential nominations, and will lead the undergraduate All-Campus slate in the coming SBG campaign. The convention, which met for more than 10 hours at the Coral Gables home of Patti McBride, also nominated Ann Spaulding and Ralph Flach for the positions of secretary and treasurer of SBG. The emergence of the new party completes the picture of the traditional two-party system that has characterized campus elections. After the nomination of Liberty Forum candidates two weeks ago it appeared as though that party might go unopposed in the voting this spring. The old Student Action Association, which afforded the opposition for LF last year, folded after the April elections. They've Landed... But Why? THINK YOU’RE SEEING THINGS? Well, you haven’t seen anything yet. The cymbal-minded chap at left and the man above who h*« just been tapped by wooden arrow are only a sampling of the ugly men who will grace (?) the annual APO Ugly Man Dance tonight at the Student Union patio. Proceeds from the dance will go to the Paul R. Yarck Memorial Fund. See story on Page 4. LOVELY TO LOOK AT is Hurricane Honey No. 18. She’s Paula Weinstein, 20-year-old junior philosophy major. This black-haired, brown eyed coed was an Ibis beanty, Homecoming Princess and is a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. If Paula will come to The Hurricane office today at 3:30 p.tn., Art Jacobson, Tempo business manager, will present her with the traditional orchid.
